http://espn.go.com/chicago/nba/story/_/ ... -uncertainCHICAGO -- Bulls guard Derrick Rose has a torn meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery, the team said Tuesday.
Rose reported earlier in the day with right knee pain. An exam and subsequent MRI confirmed the tear.
A timetable for Rose's return will be determined once he has surgery, the team said.
Rose has been dogged by injuries for the past three seasons.
He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Game 1 of the 2012 playoffs against Philadelphia. The 2011 NBA MVP missed the entire next season, then played in only 10 games last season before a right knee injury shelved him for the rest of the season.
Rose was scratched for one game last month for soreness in his left knee, and he missed four games in November with a hamstring injury.
Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James was one of many players reacting to the news on Twitter late Tuesday.

Just when you think everything's looking up. Terrible luck.

I said long time ago, after his first injury, that they need to trade him ASAP to get best value out of him because once your knees go your NBA career is over at least for the players like him that need to drive to the basket every time they need to score. He is a heck of good athlete that depends on his quickness and jumping ability to score and now that his knees are going slowly he can't do that anymore. He isn't 3 point shooter nor great mid range shooter. He can pass and if he can do what Tony Parker does which is making those floaters in the paint then he should have few more years left. Bulls need to find another young superstar and Rose should accept to be a role player. It's heartbreaking to see him like this because he is a good dude.

On the bright side, this gives him more time to prepare for his sons' graduation.

So let me get this straight.
The Heat have the best PG in the EAST, best SG in the EAST, and best C in the EAST. Heat to the Finals, thank you bai now.

It wasn't really an option, though. Trading a player who has a huge contract and is coming off a serious knee injury is easier said than done, the offers were not going to be stellar.

Bulls sure haven't had much luck with star point guards in recent years!
Jay Williams career cut very short and I think Derrick Rose is the new Brandon Roy.
That being said I think he could still come back next year and have an average career but sadly I think his allstar best is behind him.
If it was that easy to trade him I think the Bulls should do so at the first possible point but that could be quite some time before Rose can prove his health.

That's the thing. He's got a huge contract and is coming off several major injuries. That's a tough pitch:
"He'll totally be fine after surgery, and a great player again."
"If you believe that, why are you trading him?"
"Uhhhhhh..."
Meanwhile, seems he'll undergo a
meniscectomy, which I believe is the same procedure Russell Westbrook ended up having. A timetable for his return will be determined after that.

Some reason to be a little optimistic I guess.
Something to consider though...if it's a Westbrook type recovery, Will Derrick return if he's medically cleared to play? Do the Bulls shut him down regardless? The last 2 return timelines were just a big mystery. The coverage and hysteria can be worse for this one

History says they'll err on the side of caution, and he'll be out until next season. I'd be very surprised if he returned this year, even if he was cleared to do so.

Poor Rose. He just needs to retire. I want him to stay but from a mental standpoint it's a wonder he hasn't killed himself.

so what do you think the bulls should do? rose is on the books at a max rate for a few years. Butler is due for a big raise.

I don't think they can do anything except wait for him to heal, and try again. It's not that trading him is unthinkable, it's that it's not feasible. Even if they want to explore that option, I doubt that happens until the 2016/2017 season, when he's an expiring contract.

iirc There's two options: repair or removal. Westbrook chose repair and had complications due to debris inside due to wear and tear. Rose had the repair on his first meniscus tear to look towards the future.
sounds like rose is having part or all of the meniscus removed this time (maybe due to the nature of the damage), which will not bode well for his career
Fri Feb 27, 2015 3:04 pm
Rose can't decide really if repair or removal since the extent of the tear can only be determined during the actual surgery itself, it's the doctor's call based on the damage if it can even be repaired at all or not.
That's why the timetable for return can only be determined after the surgery.

On one hand I really feel bad for Rose, he always seemed like a nice guy, but at least his hardcore fans will finally shut up(if tehy even exist anymore).

Rose still has a very strong fan base around the world and rightfully so, the things he can do when healthy are amazing!
I don't expect to see Rose again this season. I know everybody heals at different rates but Derrick has a proven record of waiting till he feels that he is 100% again before setting step on the court again why players like Paul George I hear is already practicing again with the Pacers

He's doing the "quick snip" removal which will let him come back this season. His knee will slowly degenerate from here on out

I think it's a good call to return this season, even as someone who followed Roy's career since college. 4-6 weeks is appropriate (unlike 9 days which Roy and MVP came back in). The hit to his confidence missing a fourth straight postseason would be worse than the potential complications. Either way people are writing him off, might as well give it a go (unless they go on a massive tear without him)
Sat Feb 28, 2015 5:15 am
We shall see if Rose's clock ticks the same as the real world's. Management said they expect him back this. I shall remain cautiously optimistic
Sat Feb 28, 2015 6:03 am
I honestly see him sitting the rest of the season if the team keeps randomly loosing to under .500 teams. Anyway, I don't see him comming back in 4-6 weeks. Actually I believe he will be back in a minimum of 8 weeks. Rose is cautios like my grandma is when it's ice on ground - Slow and steady better than breaking something

It's a promising prognosis, at least. I anticipated that he'd definitely be out until next year, but if there's a chance he can be back for the Playoffs, I suppose we can't rule it out.
