Joel Embiid reportedly close to 300 pounds

Mon Jan 19, 2015 9:29 pm

With little interest in keeping up his fitness.

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Kansas center Joel Embiid with the No. 3 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft because he was the best player available. After a back fracture kept him out of the NCAA Tournament, he was on track to be the No. 1 overall in June, but a stress fracture in his foot saw him drop to Philly. He’s not expected to play this year while recuperating, but he could be a franchise centerpiece when he does get healthy. A recent report from Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Keith Pompey claims he’s been shirking recent training sessions and has ballooned to close to 300 pounds.

I suppose it's subject to confirmation, much like the report of Larry Sanders wanting to call it quits, but obviously troubling if true.

Just bulking up to bang with the biggest centers like Andrew Bynum and Shaq.

I'm not surprised. He's seemed like a knucklehead to me especially with his antics on Twitter so he doesn't strike me as the type to actually try to get better

Depression.
Considering his 13-14 year old brother died in October last year.

For whatever it's worth, Embiid has denied this.

"I don't weigh that," Embiid said in passing at a D.C. hotel Sunday night with the Sixers in town to face the Wizards for a Martin Luther King Day matinee.

A team source backed him up, stating that 275 pounds has been the maximum weight for the 7-footer whom the Sixers selected with the third overall pick in last year's draft.

Either way, it's not terribly important right now. He still can't do much basketball activity except for shooting stand-still jumpers.

I mean, it's not ideal but it's nothing to freak out about. Given his foot problem, he obviously shouldn't be playing while carrying that much weight, but he's probably about 9 and a half months away from his NBA debut. If he shows up for Summer League weighing close to 300, then we can start to worry. Plenty of time to shed the weight until then, especially when he can finally move a little better and participate in actual basketball drills.

Embiid doesn'tsseem like a super serious guy and he's going through some shit right now so I'd hesitate to call him Eddy Curry 2.0. High body weight is no good if you're an injury prone Center though. Oden was defective but we may have gotten more than a season and a quarter out of him had he not bulked up

From all I've heard, the plan has been and still remains to get him back to his Kansas weight (250 lbs) by the time he is ready to play. That's why I think it's not a huge deal right now, but it will be if Embiid doesn't shed weight until, say, Summer League.
