Celtics trade Brandan Wright to Suns, Jeff Green to Grizzlies

Postby benji on Sat Jan 10, 2015 10:06 am

The Boston Celtics have sent recently acquired big man Brandan Wright to Phoenix for a protected draft pick that initially belonged to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Suns announced Friday.

Tayshaun Prince and protected future first-round pick to Boston -- most likely not going to Celts before 2019 -- proves enough to land Green

@WojYahooNBA If Green deal is finalized tonight, Boston GM Danny Ainge will potentially have 11 first-round picks over the next four years.

Poor Wright.

Wright's not going to make the Suns a contender though he's a nice pick up for them. I'm more interested to see how Jeff Green will fit in for the Grizzlies though. Replacing old Tayshaun might look like an upgrade but younger Green is somebody that's actually have never been a good player who needs the ball in his hands to be on the court.

He might finally be being put in that sixth/seventh man role.

So it's just going to be Boston and Philadelphia drafting this year?

I guess that's feasible. It's Quincy and Tayshaun's minutes he has to eat up, maybe Courtney Lee and Vince Carter's as well if he proves to be capable. Either way I'm not too sold on this move. The Grizzlies are more or less the same team even with Jeff Green

The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to send former lottery pick Austin Rivers to the Celtics to help complete Boston's looming Jeff Green trade with Memphis, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Pelicans have been recruited to join the trade struck Friday by the Celtics and Grizzlies by sending Rivers to Boston and taking on guard Quincy Pondexter from the Grizzlies.

On Friday, as ESPN.com first reported, Boston and Memphis came to terms on the larger elements of a deal, with the Celtics agreeing to send Green to the Grizzlies for Tayshaun Prince's $7.7 million expiring contract and a future first-round pick.

I've also been hearing that Austin Rivers is likely to end up with the Clippers in a separate deal.

Jeff Green lowered the Grizzlies starting lineup's average age.

Good fit for Grizzlies.

Russ Smith in addition to Jeff Green is a pretty nice package for the Grizz. Smith can take the backup PG reins away from Udrih in a few years.

Good for wright. Back on a playoff team. Good insurance for Len. In a better position to challenge the fg% record.

Was never a fan of green. He looks like he really is 6'4. Never understood when someone says along the lines of "needs to have the ball in his hands to be effective".

I never heard someone say a player is effective on offense without the ball.

Most of times and for this case it means he's a high usage low efficient player. He'll get his raw numbers using possessions but outside that he has little game. Otherwise those kind of player stink bad if not allowed use up possessions to their liking.

Yeah I know what it means. Why not say that instead of needs ball on his hands to be "effective". Really can a player be effective without the ball in his hands?

Yes because they can be active by setting screens or moving to an open spot (see: Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Martin)

You could actually. James Johnson plays same position as Jeff Green but one of them is pretty good without handling the ball much and neither does he use up as much of usage but he's still quite effective on the court as his PER suggests. We call him kind of player that's able to be 'effective without the ball in his hands'.

(notice how Jeff Green has MUCH higher usage% yet has significantly less PER than Johnson)

That's efficiency tho. There's a difference between being effective and being efficient.

Well then efficiency is what makes him effective on the court(actually he also reb well + some other little things), just as Jeff Green can be still effective for some teams that need shot taker(or high usage player) for some shot depleted teams.

Another naggy definition discussion I am not really interested in. If anyone has problem with 'effectiveness with or without ball in hands', take it up with entire basketball watchers. I didn't come up with that shit. Sure it's often mis-used by some but let's quit yanking about this bois. This is micro aggression.

So you're saying he can be effective on a team that needs shot takers even though he isn't efficient at it...

There is value in players that can simply use up possessions. A bad shot is better than a turnover.

The value of that is determined by who the other players are more than the player in a lot of ways. That's why a Jeff Green can be useful off the bench when he's playing with guys less adept to creating shots where he won't help a good team playing alongside Durant/Westbrook/etc who should be getting his possessions.

I think the statement here "needs the ball to be effective" is more indicative of the idea that if you're sticking Green in the corner he's useless since he's not a real threat. I'm not sure this isn't a better role for him, but it's not how he plays, he jacks a lot of long twos and makes some bad half-drives. Some players you can force them into a different role, others you can't and you have to find their role. We'll have to see what the Grizzlies come up with.

Enough with the common sense. Who plays better with their new team- josh smith or Jeff green??
