Re: Paul George Injured at Team USA Game, don't look for video

Less than 24 hours removed from the incident, it's only natural that "no more stars in international competition" is being talked about as a distinct possibility. It's certainly understandable, and it may come to pass, but I wouldn't be surprised if owners and executives do back off that stance a little. Once everyone's had a chance to collect their thoughts and consider the situation, I think that national pride and the fact that this is the first really bad injury in 22 years of NBA players being allowed to compete in international competition will change people's minds on taking a hard line approach to no stars in these events.

Woj elaborates on his Tweet: Why Paul George's injury could become a 'game-changer' for international basketball

Of course, the keyword in the title and throughout the column itself is "could"; it'll be discussed and it's a possibility, but let's not jump the gun.

It's a natural reaction in the wake of the injury, and it's not like owners and executives didn't have these concerns beforehand, but I still believe that national pride will win out. I also still think that a little further out from the incident, the fact that this is the first really bad injury in 22 years of NBA players competing in international tournaments and inter-squad scrimmages for Team USA will carry more weight.

The column talks about wear and tear, but what happened to Paul George was not wear and tear; it was a freak injury, a horrible accident that was sheer bad luck as much as anything else. He could have just as easily broken his leg, torn his ACL, or suffered some other serious injury while messing around in the Drew League. To that end, if stars are excluded from international competition, then I have to imagine that tougher restrictions will be placed on them taking part in the Drew League and other events that aren't sanctioned by the NBA.

What I learned from his and Kevin Ware's injury is not to land sideways when jumping. There are no joints, beside s a rolling ankle, that won't bend in that direction and something may give. Obviously, the stanchion being soclose to the baseline is also a factor.

I don't think superstars should remove themselves from international competition. They should just take note of the circumstances of the injury, and be more wary of their surroundings.

Bird came out and said that it was a freak injury that could've happened at any time so he didn't seem to blame Team USA and the international play for the Pacers' impending struggles... They probably wish they had Stephenson back right about now

Man. He might miss the season?

This sucks. This sucks for the NBA, for the Pacers and for the Eastern Conference.

Recovery and rehab is apparently 12-18 months as told by Kevin Ware's surgeon.

George could be out for two seasons if he does a Derrick Rose.

That's pretty hard to do in a fast paced basketball game.

The only way to avoid that kind of injuries is to play like Z-Bo or not to play basketball at all.
This could happen to LeBron everytime he goes for a chase down block, or never.
