Each player's closest statistical counterpart in this century

  1. Limited to players since the 1999-2000 Season (Unfortunately, pace skews the numbers too much to include the 90's)
  2. From ages 23-32 (to center the comparison around most players' prime)
  3. Averaged at least 24 mpg and played more than 82 games in the 23-32 age span
  4. Comparing their regular season numbers (per 36 minutes) with these stats: 2PA, 3PA, FTA, TRB, AST, STL, BLK, TOV, PF, PTS, 2P% 3P%, FT%, PER, ORtg, and DRtg

Methodology
  • Normalized each stat so that each stat holds equal weight
  • Calculated Eucledian distance across each stat for each player when compared to every other player
  • Chose the player with the least total Eucledian distance (most similar player)

I'm not sure I understand this since players on the right are compared to differentplayers when their name ison the left.

Re: Each player's closest statistical counterpart in this century

It's because the player on the right is the closet counterpart out of all other possible players, not always an exact match.

So to take two players who have the same counterpart. Josh Smith and Boris Diaw both have Lamar Odom as their top match. But for Smith it could be 50% and for Diaw it could be 65%, reversing it Odom gets Donyell Marshall which could be a 75% match. And Marshall matches Sheed at 80% so they have each other as their top counterparts.

Just with PTS/REB/AST/STL/BLK we can sorta illustrate how the players form each "wing" of this fivesome:
Smith: 17.1/8.4/3.7/1.4/1.8
Boris: 11.9/5.8/4.8/0.8/0.7
Lamar: 14.3/9.4/3.8/0.9/0.9
Donyell: 15.6/9.5/1.9/1.2/1.2
Sheed: 16.3/7.1/2.1/1.0/1.4

Smith is the left-wing, Sheed is the right-wing and Lamar is the center. In reality I think Hollinger found most NBA players will show up as in the 90% range as similar to each other, with some outliers like Reggie Evans at 70% similar to anyone else.

For the most part though, a lot of them are really really good at describing the "type" of player each is from a subjective point of view.

One other thing to note, how many players are on the right compared to the left. 309 players, only 172 counterparts.

Cuttino Mobley, Mike Bibby, and Mike Dunleavy all had the most times on the right, followed by Raja Bell.

But if one player has a 75 percent match wouldn't both he and his counterpart just flip flop left and right? Why would a third player be the closest counterpart if two were already closerto each other?

A might be closest to B but B is closest to C, however A and C are far apart.

You would probably end up having Micheal Jordan=Magic and then 4 or 5 players and back to Magic=Jordan.

I don't see the point in this. It clearly fails to indicate any sort of impact a player has on the court for his team. But that's statistics I guess.

I mean, do you agree with Westbrook=Wade? Wade is x10 more efficient than Westbrook. Some list

You do realize this is STATISTICS? You do realize Carter in his prime was the best swingman in the NBA(for a short time)?

Both shoot 4 3pt's a game

Both score 20 ppg

Both are around 5 rpg

Both are around 4 apg

Both have around .440 FG%

Both have around .370 3pt %

Both are around 80% FT

Both have 3 fouls per game

What exactly is bullshit?

This version is quite buggy, like most things that include stats.

They have some great and logical choices

Wilson Chandler and Jeff Green are really similar players in almost every statistical aspect. I didn't really link them as equals until now.

Nicolas Batum and Chandler Parsons (also vice versa) sounds good on paper, but they aren't as closely matched as the pair before. Still a good choice.

There are a looot of bugs here.

---Andre Iguodala and Gerald Wallace also sounds great, but per 36 not so. Andre has 2.2 APG more, and that's not a small number. Wallace also has 7.0 RPG compared to Andres 5.5. Shooting percentages and defensive stats go here and there but are mostly fairly close so I see what they're hanging on to. But then there are 3pt attempts, turnovers...I just think this is a bit of a stretch.
Andre Drummond DeAndre Jordan

---Vince Carter and Danny Granger (and vice versa) is also a big stretch. Obviously they have some stats in common, but most are off. If they couldn't find a better match, leave out the player?

---Kevin Love and Dirk Nowitzki is a stretch. Okay, you can make a case that it's there until you get to the rebound collumn. There's a huge and obious difference there. Again, if you can't find a better match, why bother?

---Josh Smith and Kenyon Martin is really bad.

Yeah, efficiency is where these two are separated. But raw stats are pretty close so I guess it is what it is...
