2k always overrated Josh Smith. Oh well, I can live with that.

Josh Smith's overall is often inflated in NBA Live as well. As I mentioned in the Friday Five I posted before, his athleticism and dunking prowess is responsible for that, given the way overall ratings are usually calculated.

Just hoping Josh Smith shooting from more than 9ft is noticeable lower cause he's getting worse for the past 2 seasons

Josh Smith:
Year | 10-15 ft | 16 - 24 ft
12 - 13 | 24% | 33%
11 - 12 | 34% | 37%
10 - 11 | 31% | 39%
09 - 10 | 27% | 30%
08 - 09 | 23% | 34%
Had a rough year from the 10 - 15 foot range last season, but otherwise he's about as consistent as any other player given such a small set of data. Small fluctuations in both directions year to year.

Never understood why Dirk Nowitski is rated so low in the game. I believe he's a 83 or 84 overall. He should at least be like 86 or 87, one of the leagues great scorers has been dissed for a couple of years now in this game.

He doesn't have stellar athletic or dunking ratings, which drops his overall a little.

great job comparing all of them to last year, thank you

I was surprised that Dirk is rated 84 despite having a rough season last year. Also is being athletic the basis on having a higher overall? Not how good you improve or play in last season/playoffs? I'm sure that it was already discussed here on how 2k formulates their ratings so i don't know lol.

One would have to assume that the various athleticism ratings contribute to a player's overall rating. Dirk's ratings in these areas is presumably less than many of the other high caliber scoring players in the league, which likely contributes to much of the criticism that his overall is 'too low'. If his individual ratings are proper and accurate, the overall shouldn't matter. In fact, often when 2K or EA respond to complaints about a player being rated 'too low', the result is inflated ratings in areas that are undeserving, to boost the overall, which makes the player less accurately rated than he was to begin with.

Exactly. Athletic and dunking ratings tend to factor too much into the way overall ratings are calculated, so players like Josh Smith tend to look slightly underrated while players such as Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki have at times appeared to be underrated.
