Bulls to select Tony Snell. That means Luol Deng will be traded very soon?

Another bigman with no knees. Yeah, we haven't had enough of those the last few years. Trading our best player for a pipe dream AGAIN. Only Jrue is still very young with room to improve. This team will struggle to win 20 games, especially with Noel missing like half of the season.

I don't think I've ever been more neutral about a draft than I am now. Zeller's a good pick, but I feel like we could've traded down for additional assets and still grabbed him.

Re: 13-14 NBA DRAFT

This felt like an NBA 2K draft. I had Bennett going 7th in my mock, but Charlotte made the worst selection imo. Not a fan of the McCollum pick - what's the point of getting a second, probably not-as-good version of Damian Lillard?

Tyreke can move back to the point where he had his 20-5-5 rookie season, with a legitimate shooter next to him with McLemore. Thomas moves to 6th man, where his confident scoring mentality can lead the bench (I hate to suggest such a demotion for Isaiah after all he's done, but his game lends itself to that role). Just begging that D'Alessandro is still working, looking to move Thornton and/or Fredette for either future picks or some help at the 3.

In general this was a really exciting draft, with a shocker at 1.

Weren't the Kings at their best when Isiah Thomas ran the offense last season? It just didn't work too well with Tyreke at point last season.

And pretty bold move by the 76ers. I think it's a good one. I'm not too high on Noel but Jrue I don't think was that good either.

I laughed everytime David Stern smiled when he was booed... but when he did that signal....

I'm still wondering why the Sixers traded Holiday for Noel.... they took Carter-Williams so he will be the next starting PG...

Maybe they want to pair together Noel and Bynum.... you have there 2 healthy knees

Theoretically yes, simply because Tyreke has been forced to move between the 1-3 for the past two seasons due to poor owners and questionable coaching schemes. In college and in his rookie year, he was the primary ball handler at the point, where his size and penetration created our offense. I'd be slightly leery about if Tyreke can adapt back to the 1, but if it works that's a dynamic backcourt.
Basically that is the only way the Kings FO can manage this if we want to keep Tyreke, Isaiah, and McLemore, and run a 3-guard rotation. We simply have way too many guards, and Thornton and Jimmer are probably on the outside looking in now (also you can forget about resigning Douglas).

I think it was risky for Philly to give away Holiday for Noel. Do they go all-out to resign Bynum and put him with Noel, sending Thaddeus to the bench? I'm curious to see what goes on with them.

Pretty interesting Draft with all the trades. David Stern's reactions and taunting of the fans was outstanding. It was, after all, his last NBA Draft and if you're going to go out, go out in style. Cool moment with Hakeem coming out to say a few words at the end of the first round.

Intrigued by the Bulls' pick, definitely can't hurt to add a shooter but I'm keeping my expectations low. Knowing Thibbs' rotation habits, there's a pretty good chance he won't see much court time until his second year, anyway.

What are you talking about? You mean a 23-year old All-Star point guard on a very team-friendly contract is "not that good"? The guy is a very solid jumpshooter, a top5 defensive PG in the league, last season he also vastly improved as a ball handler and playmaker. The only major flaw in his game is that he's bad at drawing fouls and getting himself to the line. The poor shot selection and TS is more on Collins and his mid-range oriented offense than on Holiday himself. Yes, his play - and stats alike - fell off a cliff towards the end of the season because Doug was playing him way too many minutes - during which he had to be the entire offense of the team - in meaningless games as it became clear relatively fast that Philly will not make the playoffs. In 12-13 he exceeded any reasonable expactations people may have had about how he would handle such a big role on the team so suddenly after being mostly a spot-up shooter and secondary ball handler in 11-12. He has to learn how to manage his stamina better, cause like I said, he obviously ran out of gas about midway through March, but it will come - probably as early as next season.

To give you an idea of how important Jrue was last season: the Sixers lost all 4 games that he sat out with an injury in December by an average margin of 13 points. Small sample size? Sure, but the margin really speaks for itself here. Only one of those games was even remotely close - a 7-point loss to Dallas.

I was very much looking forward to seeing the jump in efficiency he would make under a coach that employs an offensive system that's not "shoot contested jumpshots from 20 feet all day cause driving might result in a turnover". Holiday's still really young and we haven't seen the best of him yet.

And after being fresh off the Bynum disaster (and Brand... and Webber...) we trade him for somebody who could very well end up the same way. The only potential redeeming qualities of this dumbass trade is the top5-protected pick we got from the Pelicans and the fact that our own pick should be in the top3 next year - which in itself doesn't mean much because we can always draft the next Evan Turner. IF Noel works out and those picks are turned into something really good, we might have something here. But I'm so sick and tired of counting on someone with his knees blown off being healthy that it's not even funny anymore. I still say kicking out the best player on the team who's not even in his prime yet for a longshot is a stupid idea.

The other positive from this declaration of Sixers 13-14 being a big fat tank train is that Bynum is almost definitely out. Unless they want to pair him up with Noel - twin cripples with one healthy knee combined. Sign Oden, trade Thad and cap space fillers to the Knicks for Amare and we're good to go.

Re: 13-14 NBA DRAFT

I'm a Sixers fan and I love what Jrue did for us this past season. As much as I would have loved to keep him on the roster, the front office wants to build a contender and they're trying to do that through the draft.

Noel is a high risk-high reward guy, but that's what the Jrue trade involved, high risk. This trade can very well backfire, but we can't judge this trade until two things, 1 we see how good Noel is and whether or not he can become a solid center in the NBA with his knee issues and 2, who we end up picking in next years draft with the Pelicans pick and our pick.

I hate a losing season as much as the next guy, but if we are to go through a rebuilding year where we have a chance at a high draft pick, next years draft class is the way to go about it.

Re: 13-14 NBA DRAFT

Trading your already proven star PG, which the 76ers drafted btw, is not building a contender.

Stop disrespecting the humble MVP Derrick Rose! Oh wait...

Sixers management is apparently high on Turner, even last year...or the year before that... that's why they were more than willing to part with Jrue while Evans can still continue his 'development' with the team.:facepalm2:

Obviously they're not going to be able to be a contender from day 1, but that's where the hopes of Nerlens Noel come in. Prior to the knee injury he was touted as a franchise changing player, his stock went down because of the injury though which is justified, but if he can live up to what he was supposed to be then this could be a good trade.

That however is still a big if, because trading proven talent for potential is a big risk. I'm glad we have a prospect like Noel, but regardless I wish we could have kept Jrue.

Just for the stochastic theory fans. How are the chances that a big guy who is already prone to knee injuries suffers some similar injury again?
Bad move imho...

I'm so pumped for Canadian basketball right now.

Bennett first overall this year, with Kelly Olynyk also in the lottery as well. I think Myck Kabongo who went undrafted will be a solid pick up for whoever picks him up (he's on the Miami SL roster).

Of course there's Wiggins coming in '14 too. Can't wait to see this Canadian national team in a few years.

This.

Now I actually want him to stay for next season. He's going to be a key figure in the tank movement. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to trade him, but chances are nobody was willing to offer jack shit for him. Make him the leader of the offense, let him score 20 points on 25 FGA every night and let him walk afterwards. In case his mythical potential miraculously explodes, Turner will likely become a part of a sign-and-trade for somebody with a history of serious knee problems.

antho wrote: the front office wants to build a contender and they're trying to do that through the draft.

Very well. We already know that Jrue+Thad+a bunch of scrubs is not enough for playoffs even in the East. It's misleading that they finished only 4 games behind Milwaukee, because they had to go on a winning streak in late March-early April for pride and ruin their chances to get a good pick. The playoff race ended around the trade deadline in this conference.

About Noel: even ignoring the injury, there are a lot of question marks with this guy. Firstly, he's an offensive scrub - or, you know, "raw" if you want to be diplomatic - he can't score in any other way than a dunk. Secondly, he weighs about as much as an average SG in the NBA with hopes of being a C. We saw last season that Anthony Davis can't be a center in the NBA - even in the era of smallball - at least until he puts on some muscle. Noel is even skinnier. Perhaps he can bulk up, but then we don't know if his knees can take it. So what do we know at the moment? He can rebound and block shots. WHOOP-DE-DOO! There are quite a few guys who can do that in this league and you could get almost all of them without trading Jrue Holiday.

Maybe I'm totally wrong and he can dominate in the NBA - which I'd be happy if he did, being a Sixer now - but I'll believe it when I see it.

Let's say he works out and is at least somewhat of a force. Naturally, we improve. In 14-15 we could become an about ~35-win team again. What happens then? We kick his ass out for rookies and picks because we're still not good enough to contend and need to tank harder? That's fucking stupid.

That's my point. If you have a terrible team and want to build a contender, getting rid of one of the two players who were worthy of still being around when the team finally gets good (Thad being the other, in case that's unclear), especially when he's a 23-year old All-Star, is a bad start.
