Steve Clifford new head coach in Charlotte

Tue May 28, 2013 5:43 pm

Former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Steve Clifford is the new (and soon to be fired) head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets. Clifford is said to have signed a 3 year contract worth $6 million contract.

he was an assistant for the Lakers and I had no idea who he was

never heard of him either until rumors started circulating, even wikipedia didn't know he existed until yesterday. How do you jump from being unknown to head coach of a NBA team, even if it is just the bobcats?

According to the article above, Steve Clifford is close to DH12. Maybe MJ is making a play for Dwight? :D

He was also Stan Van Gundy's assistant with the Magic.
He's more of a defense guy than Mike 'kill spot' Dunlap (offense).

According to the article he also worked under Jeff Van Gundy's in New York and Houston. So definitely a D guy.

JVG was talking him up during the Spurs/Grizzlies game yesterday...so, a good hire for Charlotte, possibly? At some point, they need to bring in someone who is going to have a chance to stick around for more than a season if they want to even at least be respectable. They have a couple of decent young players, they've got another lottery pick this year, so if they can make a couple of good moves and let Clifford have at least a couple of years to work with the roster, maybe they'll at least be getting on the right track.

I've heard a ton of people talking him up, far more so than we heard with Dunlap. I'm hoping this means more development from our bigs. Dunlap developed our backcourt guys (Kemba and Henderson) pretty nicely, so hopefully he can develop Mullens, Biyombo, McRoberts, and others into solid bigs. Also, he's rumored to be bringing in Patrick Ewing along with him.

Ewing would be an improvement over Mullens and Biyombo. ;)

is it just me or has Jordan been a bit Sterling-esque in his approach to hiring coaches?

EDIT: except for Paul Silas, I was a big fan of his when he was with the hornets and he also called carlos boozer a cunt

Larry Brown.
That Sterling also hired.

The Bobcats have had six coaches since 2007.

The Clippers have had six coaches since 2000. (Even farther back if you discount the interms.)

and by Sterling-esque I mean cheap. i'd never heard of clifford or dunlap before they got hired

Oh, didn't mean to seem like I was responding to yours, I just saw the headline on ESPN about the six coaches in six years thing and since you mentioned Sterling I looked at the Clippers to see how far back they've lasted with six coaches. It's kinda amazing how fast Jordan has churned through coaches.

i didn't think you were responding to mine, but i just wanted to clarify.

and the reason why the Clips didn't have more than 6 coaches was because Dunleavy actually did a pretty decent job and then when he wasn't, Sterling was hesitant on firing him so he wouldn't have to pay him

Not a very subtle job of tanking. That's how I felt about Dunlap, but even if this guy's good, he'll be a scapegoat for their team's lack of talent.

Hall of Famer and former Knicks center was hired by the Charlotte Bobcats as associate head coach, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. He’ll join the coaching staff of recently hired head coach Steve Clifford.

It's a good move by the Cats that will surely pay out on the defensive end. Players like Mullens and Biyombo should also benefit from his presence.

They're the 2 guys (Ewing & Clifford) that worked on developing Dwight when he was still with the Magic.

CHARLOTTE, NC—Bobcats owner Michael Jordan announced Wednesday that he has officially hired Patrick Ewing as the team’s assistant coach purely to watch the former New York Knicks center lose more. “I’m thrilled to add Patrick to the coaching staff, and I am very happy to once again be the person responsible for Patrick losing game after game after game,” said Jordan, adding that much like their heated rivalry in the 1990s, Jordan will have a front row seat to watch Ewing consistently fail on the basketball court. “I’m incredibly confident that with our roster of players, and under the tutelage of our head coach, Steve Clifford, Patrick will be frustrated, upset, and constantly question whether or not his team is good enough to reach the playoffs, let alone win an NBA Title. Putting him through that kind psychological torment again couldn’t excite me more.” Sources later confirmed Jordan was also in negotiations to bring on former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Craig Ehlo so that he could “make that guy’s life a living hell all over again too.”

I doubt the Heat would even reach 22 wins if they have the same roster as the Bobcats.

All that's missing is the Space Jam reference that an article on Yahoo! managed to cram in there.
