Bruce wrote:If all hope was lost to re-sign Howard, I wouldn't want Asik & Lin. I Would want Parsons, Beverly and Robinson plus 1st rnd picks. Lin although coming to his hometown LA, Lin is NOT worth the 14+ million owed to him in in 14'-15'. Asik is also a typical overpriced big man. Parson & Beverly are the real gems that the Lakers should target in such a trade. The money would actually work. Asik is not worth a dollar over 10M. Lin is not worth a dollar over the mid level exception. That would leave the Lakers with a payroll of approx $83M in 13'-14'.

If I were Kupchak I aslo would try to play hardball by not taking Asik & Lin back, because if the Rockets succeed in taking Howard but are not able to trade Lin & Asik, this seriously impedes the Rockets ability to re-stock their bench. So that becomes a big FU to Howard for leaving. Even if the Rockets manage to get rid of Asik & Lin, Harden + DH12's pay would seriously impede the Rockets ability to sign better players. Meanwhile, Kupchak even without Howard in the fold would have many options in the 2014 free agency, w/o being stuck with Asik & Lin's salary & only the $9M+ owed to Nash w/c he could still amnesty and start rebuilding with only around $6M or so commited on payroll. Then maybe sign Asik for 5M and Lin for 2M, sign 2 max players in the great free agency of 2014 and a great big FU again to Howard.

So, you want Parsons, Beverly and Robinson plus 1st rnd picks for a player don't want to resign with you, wile the Rockets can just sign him on FA with their huge free cap? Yeah, like that gonna happen.

The $14.90M poison pill is what they're referring to. The Lakers would really lose some cap flexibility as Lin and Asik will be payed $28M in their final year of their contract.

He does have that "poison pill" year at the end of his contract, same as Asik.

I know the poison pill, but isn't it 2014-2015? I think they say as Lin is overpaid this year and next year too, which is just 5 mil.

iirc, it was 5, 8/9, then 15

anyways, if the lakers lose dwight for nothing, they're still way over the cap (about 16 mil if i'm right) and then will still have to re-sign clark for way more than the 1 mil he made this year. that pretty much excludes them from getting any new free agents unless they get a team to do a sign & trade with them which is unlikely since they don't have any valuable assets unless they pawn off gasoft on some sucker or they amnesty kobe (which they will not do). so i figure you might as well get two young players that can help and contribute immediately for dwight, even if they make more than people think they're worth. and since when have the Busses ever worried about money? ive never seen their profit/loss reports, but i would imagine they're turning a huge profit, especially the huge deal they signed with time warner cable.

It's $5M-$5M then the whopping $15M. Though when the Rockets chooses to trade them, the receiving team should have at least $8M.

@qballer you're right, what i meant was even in college he had ucla as an option to be close to home. meaning there would probably be some desire for lin to play in LA.

@werewolf914 what i am saying is howard would probably want a sign and trade if he leaves LA, because this is the only way he gets the 5 yr contract and a extra 30M. if howard would be willing to take a pay cut and sign with the rockets, then there is not much discussion about taking anything backfrom the rockets.

The problem is you're asking too much for him in that case. Just put yourself in Rocket shoe, would you like to trade Parsons, Beverly and Robinson plus 1st rnd picks for Howard? With me it's a NO, loud and clear. There are still many other fishes in the sea.

Of course I wouldn't like that. But what Bruce is trying to say is that the Lakers really need to get young talents as early as this off-season as they are in a state of uncertainty right now.

I don't know for the Rockets. If Harden's pep talk to him can't persuade Howard to team up with him, then it's somewhat fine. I've been reading that they're also targeting Josh Smith.

He would be a great fit for them. If they sign him he'll probably have a max or close to max deal, so I hope he finally becomes an All-star.

i disagree. his love for shooting jumpshots doesn't fit into the layups & 3s offensive model of the rockets.

Was indeed referring to that 14 million, even if the Busses have deep pockets, that guy isn't worth that amount of money. I get a lot of people are still high on him and everything but nah, I wouldn't be a fan of him joining the Lakers.

Nash & Blake are still on the team. If you're so high on Lin why are you in such a rush to get rid of him?

Much will depend on how Nash will come back next season. He's not getting younger and despite his great condition (for his age) age will take it's toll. It seems as if the Suns' medical staff did it's work very well with Nash.
But even if Nash is declining, Lin wouldn't be my personal first option as his replacement.

It's hard to say. There aren't that many good PGs (FA) available in 2013. In 2014 Greivis Vasquez could possible be available but that won't help the Lakers much next season. The list of players Lakers can afford right now is very short, so a trade would probably make some sense. Nevertheless that poison pill year in Lin's contract - which would be the reason you can't get rid of him after next season - really scares me off.

Expiring contract is an asset, and it's a plus if Lin plays at high level. But then if Lin plays at high level, he wouldn't be just an expiring contract anymore but a fat contract you need to re-sign. Couldn't hurt imo. I like the sound of Lin and Dwightmare. He fixed things in NYK maybe he can do something similar for LAL. But ain't gonna happen. LoL

Aren't they talking about a hypothetical trade of Lin/Asik for Howard?
