Atlanta Hawks: Save File Corrupted

Postby Solaris Phase Two on Sun May 26, 2013 9:54 am

Welcome NLSCers to my association. I will tell the tale of high hopes and winning seasons but to no avail. Atlanta has been a storied franchise starting from its move from St.Louis. With playoff exits back-to-back who will lead this team in the new era?

Under Contract
Image
F/C Al Horford
The All-Star caliber forward has been a more than excellent player for the hawks. With the pending departure or resigning of Josh Smith, Al Horford is the Atlanta Hawks clear centerpiece to lead this franchise to greater lengths

Image
G Louis Williams
Gurad Louis Williams season was cut short by an Torn ACL last season but he is looking to bounce back from his first season for the franchise. Recently earning the Starting spot at the 2 he has shown improvement in scoring efficiency. His rehab has been going extremely well and he will be back at the start of preseason for the Atlanta Hawks

Image
SG John Jenkins

Shooting marksman John Jenkins had an impressive rookie year. Jenkins showed nothing but potential in the games he was allowed minutes into. John Jenkins will be working with the Atlanta Hawks player development staff in hopes to be the Hawks guard of the future.

Kyle Korver receiving interest in returning to the team
Image
The Atlanta Hawks have let Kyle Korver know that they want to re-sign him in free agency this offseason, and the interest in staying together is mutual.

“They said they would like to work something out, so we’ll talk in July,” Korver said. “I really enjoyed my year here in Atlanta. I enjoyed the team. I enjoyed the organization. I believe (general manager) Danny Ferry is going to do some great things here. I think he has a great opportunity to bring in guys who are going to play fun basketball.

“You know the vision he has. You know the kind of basketball that he likes to watch, and I think he’s going to bring in those types of guys, and I like the same basketball that he likes. So, I’m very open to coming back here.”

Korver, obtained in last offseason's trade with the Chicago Bulls, will become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Offseason News Around The NBA

Tony Allen hopes to Re-Sign with the Memphis Grizzlies
Image

Tony Allen is an unrestricted free agent, but the 31-year-old defensive specialist would prefer to remain with the Memphis Grizzlies.

"I don't even understand the business side," Allen said. "When July hits, somebody is going to have to sit me down and explain it. All I know is I'm a Grizzly and I believe I'm going to be a Grizzly when it's over with.

"I bleed blue. I think they going to keep me. But if they don't, I understand.

"I don't even think about it now. I just play. I love being in Memphis. I love the city. Hopefully I stay here. It feels like home."

Allen is earning a reported $3.3 million this season.

Dallas Mavericks to trade pick or draft overseas player
Image

Mark Cuban admitted on Saturday that the Dallas Mavericks could end up trading or stashing their pick in this year's NBA draft.

To prevent the player's $1.66 million against the salary cap, the Mavericks might draft a player "to stash overseas somewhere," Cuban said.

"If you look at this like a two-year plan, then we think we're on track to have a great team by the end of next year," Cuban said.

Chapter 1: The Business Side Of Things

With the franchises future looking dull, General Manager Danny Ferry has overtaken the Atlanta Hawks and have made some moves that let the team know that he means business. He recently created a list of value concerning the players who made the team last year. Mr.Ferry and his assistants assess this list everyday. "The only way to rebuild this team is through the draft" Mr.Ferry explained. "Well Dan who you like out of the cream of the crop this year?" Assistant DaVonte Hughes said. "This team needs a Small Forward who can slash and get to the rim. Also this team needs a big man down low as a defensive presence" Mr. Ferry Said. "The Center out of Louisville...What was his name again?" Ferry Said. "Gorgui Dieng" Hughes Said. "Yes him, I see him as a Dwight Howard without the babyish antics" "Hes an excellent defensive center id insert him into the starting lineup immediately" Ferry explained. "Ill evaluate him within the next few days boss" Hughes said as he exited the room.

As Mr.Hughes exited the room Ferry twiddled his thumbs for hours thinking about who should become the next Head Coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He didnt seem to enjoy the list of free agents coaches because they have been tossed around the league like a sack of potatoes. "Lets see here Nate Mcmillan....Nope...."Ferry said to himself. Mr. Ferry had only one thing for certain and that was he was not going to retain Head Coach Larry Drew. "Thats it!" Ferry said sounded excited. "Ill just call my old buddies from my tenure with the San Antonio Spurs" Ferry said as he picked up the phone. He dialed the number....it was Spurs Assistant Mike Buldenholzer!

"Danny my man how have you been?" Mike said as he answered the phone. "Ive been great, i have to ask something" Ferry said. "Yes?" Mike said as he was very attentive. " Id like to interview you for the vacant head coaching job of the Atlanta Hawks" Ferry explained. "Danny boy i am flattered by your request. I've learned a lot in my tenure with being an assistant to Greg Poppovich. Nevertheless, i think i have learned enough and can bring your team to the promise land" Mike said. "Then that's settled, the interview is tomorrow and bring everything you've got to the table" Ferry said "You know i will be there" Mike said. As ferry hung up the phone he smiled as he felt like the door was opening to a bright future for this young hawks team. "Back to scouting...." Ferry said.

Player Scouting

Image

Center Gorgui Dieng was a force to be reckoned with while playing for his alma mater Louisville. He played a key role as their defensive anchor. He shows a good amount of upside that can be develop at the professional level. He is also one of the more athletic players in the draft

Image

Forward Anthony Bennett is a bit of a tweener as he stands 6'7 at Power Forward. He has been quoted to saying he doesnt care what position they put him at. He knocks opposing players around and creates baskets for himself. Bennett is a very determined rebounder and knows where to be and when.

Mrs. Barnes, the Atlanta Hawks newest, intern entered through the office doors with her cell phone in hand as she had just got off the phone. "Mr. Ferry someone named Mike said he will be in here in an hour" Mrs. Barnes said. "Okay thank you Mrs.Barnes be sure to let him in" Ferry said. With a whole hour of time to waist Danny set his mind on reviewing the free agent class of 2013. "Ill have to make a surprise this year.....something that can take us over the top....something unexpected. " Ferry said to himself. The free agent class this year included Chris Paul, Big Baby Dwight Howard and Iggy. Danny wasn't interested in taking top talent as he intends on not breaking the core to much. "Ill have to get iggy on the phone man he could boost us a bit" Ferry said to himself.

"Mr. Ferry, Mike Buldenholzer is on his way up" Mrs Barnes said. Danny smiled to himself at the opportunity to get some ideas out on the table. "Danny boy you look like you haven't aged a bit since our San Antonio days" Danny chuckled but closed his mouth firmly as it was time to get down to business. " With our current roster standing at 3 players, how would you retool this roster" Ferry said. "Well as it stands you have 4 picks in the draft. I say you looked to fill every type of need with those picks. If someone falls from where they should have been just snatch them up without asking any questions. You need a center to develop so we could move Horford to the 4. As for free agency...rebounding a plenty would help and having some all around players on this team could put them over the top" Mike explained. "Your plan doesn't include Josh Smith do you suggest me not to re-sign him." Ferry asked. "He has been a cancer to this team ever since he was drafted by the former general manager, he shall not hinder this teams progress anymore." Mike said. It was all Danny needed to here as he grabbed the inter com and said "I would like to welcome Mike Buldenholzer to the organization as our newest head coach" Mike and Danny shook hands as they worked out the framework for a contract. With the draft right around the corner, the organization can focus on moving forward instead of focusing on past mistakes.

If you are looking to move Horford to the 4 and let Smoove go then Iggy would fit in nicely there IMO. I think it depends on who you manage to get with draft picks IMO. Pekovic could work well as a C if you don't draft anyone who you like there.

Very difficult task to rebuild this roster with Smoove leaving. I don't know about Iggy, he is just like Smith a player that won't get you over the hump. Pekovic is not a very good defender, he would be the better choice with Smoove still in town.

Hawks have always been lacking a star, so if you dont want to sign one its tough to rebuild imho.

I think Mr.Ferry is just not taking a single 90 mil type talent a la Chris Paul and Dwight. Probably going to make a team using the budget wisely. Draft will be posted i will like to hear you guys thoughts

Updated May 28th 2013
NBA DRAFT 2013: The Invisible Stars

This years draft was very stocked with quality players. It's very hard to say that each team will get a star but its easy to say that each team will get the player they needed. We wont know whose the star till years from this draft.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Toronto Raptors Select Nerlens Noel, Center/Forward, Kentucky
Not surprising at all since he was the projected number one pick. He draws comparisons to Larry Sanders who has become a premier shot blocker in this league. Its a mystery to how the raptors will use him with a lineup consisting of Lowry-Derozan-Gay-Bargnani-Valanciunas. This is the best pick toronto could have gone with

2. Charlotte Hornets Select Cody Zeller, Forward/Center, Indiana
This selection gives the hornets a big man that can actually play the post. He will have to battle Haywood and Biyombo out for their spot but i see Cody doing that with ease.

3. Orlando Magic Select Anthonny Bennett, Forward, UNLV
Can't have to much forwards right? This selection might spell the end for Hedo Turkoglu's tenure with the Orlando Magic. Anthony Bennett is a bit of tweener but with this team will most likely bounce around both forward positions. Bennett brings rebounding aplenty to this team.

4. Boston Celtics Select Shabazz Muhammad, Small Forward, UCLA
Paul Pierce say hello to your apprentice. At the beginning of the year shabazz was recalled as one of the best in the draft but recent shooting woes drop caused teams to doubt his overall ability as well. He wil develop into a fine player under Doc Rivers

5. Detroit Pistons Select Dario Saric,Small Forward, Croatia
The Pistons are desperately trying garner some magic from the draft with this selection. Its a bit of a reach because he is not used to the style of american ball and because he is seen as the more developmental pick. He can become a young Peja when he develops

6.Memphis Grizzlies Select Otto Porter, Small Forward, Georgetown
Grizzlies look to replace Gay with a young forward who has a similar play style. With veteran Tayshaun Prince already in place look for Otto hear to learn a lot from the old timer.

7.Brooklyn Nets Select Ben Mclemore, Shooting Guard, Kansas
Presumably the best guard in the draft the nets get a steal because he shouldve been taken higher in the draft. The only downside to this pick is Brooklyn's rotation. Where does Mclemore fit with Joe Johnson and Marshon Brooks?

8.Phoenix Suns Select Steven Adams, Center, Pittsburgh
A perfect fit for the backup center position. Steven Adams brings a lot of tools to the table for the suns to exploit. He will need to add some muscle in the wait room to endure the pain of the post.

9.Utah Jazz Select Deshaun Thomas, Small Forward, Ohio State
Sleeper.....
Thomas has some skills that need to be developed but when they are he can be very deadly in this league

10.Portland Trail Blazers Select Dennis Schroeder, Point Guard, Germany
Adds much needed to the backcourt of Damien Lillard and Wesley Matthews. With Nolan Smith not being brought back to the team dennis fits right in.

11.New Orleans Pelicans Select Rudy Gobert, Center/Power Forward, France
This selection spells the end for Robin Lopez and his starting position. Robin Lopez is solid but he is only solid when coming off of the bench. Rudy Gobert adds needed toughness and a inside presence for a big man depleted team.

12.Dallas Mavericks Select Michael Carter-Williams, Point Guard, Syracuse
Mavs added a much needed point guard that can command the team. Michael will need to show to Mavs that he is ready to command the team and take Collisons spot as the starter.

13.Cleveland Cavaliers Select Trey Burke, Point Guard, Michigan
Even though Burke was regarded as the best PG in the draft im questioning the selection for the cavs. Their most glaring need was a Small Forward with versatility

14.Los Angeles Clippers Select Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Shooting Guard, Georgia
Excellent pick as Pope adds much needed slashing ability to the depleted Clippers.

15.Atlanta Hawks Select Victor Oladipo, Shooting Guard, Indiana
Projected to go a plethora of spots before this pick, defensive specialist finds a nice home in atlanta. He is expected to take the role that deshawn stevenson had on this team the previous season.

16.Atlanta Hawks Select Gorgui Dieng, Center, Louisville
Poor mans Larry Sanders or a Rich Mans Dwight Howard. Depending on his development Dieng can become a solid center in this league.

17.TRADE San Antonio Trades 1st Round Pick #17 and Nando De Colo for Cleveland Cavaliers Trey Burke and 2nd round pick #12
Cleveland Selects Mike Muscala, Center, Bucknell

18.Indiana Pacers Select Shane Larkin, Point Guard, Miami
This selection gives the pacers depth in their backcourt pending the departure of Dj Augustin. Shane Larkin will fit in with 2nd unit and gel quickly in the pacers organization

19.Milwaukee Bucks Select Myck Kabongo, Point Guard, Texas
Brandon Jennings say hello to your replacement.

20.Minnesota Timberwolves Select Alex Len, Center, Maryland
With the pending departure of Nikola Pekovic almost Inevitable the timberwolves look to replace him with a solid big man with decent game that can develop into the next star center in the future

21.Denver Nuggets Select Allen Crabbe, Shooting Guard, California
Crabbe is a decent shooter and a above average competitor that can bring out the best of the 2nd unit of the Nuggets

22. New York Knicks Select Ray McCallum, Point Guard, Detroit

23.Washington Wizards Select Tony Mitchell, Forward, Georgia Tech
A much needed depth selection here for the wizards. Wizards have no depth outside this first round pick selection.

24.Sacramento Kings Select Assandro Gentile, Small Forward, Italy

25.Los Angeles Lakers Select Reggie Bullock
Bye Bye Ron Artest oh i mean Metta.

26.Golden State Warriors Select Glen Rice Jr. Shooting Guard, Georgia Tech
Son of former NBA great Glen Rice, plays similar to his dad so look to expect greatness

27.Philadelphia 76ers Select CJ Mcollum Shooting Guard, Lehigh

28.Chicago Bulls Select Sergey Karassev Shooting Guard, Russia
Time to give old Rip Hamilton legs a rest

29.Oklahoma City Thunder Select Kelly OIynyk, Gonzaga
Let the nice hair in a thunder uniform era begin

30. Miami Heat Select Mason Plumlee, Forward/Center, Duke
He may not be a traditional center but he has the potential to transform into one for the Miami Heat.

HAWKS DETHRONE THEIR FORMER ALLY J-SMOOVE
Image

Despite the signing of Ex-Hawk Josh Smith, The Cleveland Cavaliers came up short by a long shot. J-Smoove didnt hit his stride until the 2nd half where he caught many alleys from Kyrie Irving. Atlanta Hawks HC Mike Budenholzer preached defense and that is what the doctor ordered. The Hawks defense kept Kyrie to just 20 points and Josh to just 15 points. Scoring the highest points for Atlanta was our very own home product Lou Williams who scored 32 points. Kyle Korver and Ivan Johnson(filling in for a injured Horford) picked up the slack scoring 17 and 16 respectively. Jarret Jack brought his spark to atlanta's first unit(filling in for a injured Teague) scoring 15.points.

ATL 22 27 31 27|107[1-0] Williams 32/5/1 Korver 17/3/3 Johnson 16/9/1

HAWKS TRADE CENTER NIKOLA PEKOVIC AND FORWARD TONY SNELL TO MAVERICKS FOR FORWARD DAVID WEST AND CENTER TIAGO SPLITTER

Hawks have traded their starting center for two players that add good veteran presence to this young Hawks team. The Hawks can now interchange Horford at the 4 and 5 using West at the 4 for his mid-range jumper. In return the Dallas Mavericks get a rebounding menace to become their starting center and Dirk to return to playing the 4. UDFA Jeff Withey will take on Tiago role as he departs. Tony Snell adds his mid range game and versatility to the Mavs.
