Grizzlies dump more salary as Nets commit fully to title run
Veteran big man Zach Randolph has today returned to the Big Apple, five years after he was traded by the New York Knicks to the LA Clippers.
This time though he'll be wearing the jersey of their newly arrived noisy neighbours, the Brooklyn Nets. Josh Selby joins him in heading to New York.
The pair join the Nets in exchange for Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Reggie Evans and a 2014 first round pick, who will link up with the Grizzlies.
For Brooklyn, this is a move that is similar to the one that saw them acquire Joe Johnson from the Hawks. Money isn't an issue for them anymore.
With billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov bankrolling the team, they have no fear of paying excessive luxury taxes in their pursuit of a championship.
Despite losing the bench scoring of Brooks and looking rather thin for reserves now, there is no question that Randolph is an upgrade on Humphries.
Their starting line-up now has an average age of about 30 and the team's championship window won't be a long one, but it is now at least possible.
Williams (19p/8a), Johnson (21p/6r/4a), Lopez (19p/9r/2b) are leading the Nets currently. Randolph (12p/9r) should give them more inside scoring.
The Nets are currently holding down the sixth seed in the eastern conference after a shaky 7-5 start to the season. They should improve now though.
Memphis on the other hand seem to be headed in the opposite direction. In the last year they've traded both Randolph and Rudy Gay for cap relief.
They still have Marc Gasol and Mike Conley as their star players, but now guys like Speights, Bayless and Ellington will really have to step up for them.
Humphries, whilst mainly acquired as an expiring contract, will be a good one-season option for them in the rotation alongside Speights and Arthur.
Brooks is the real asset for the Grizzlies in this deal. They've lacked a talented shooting guard since OJ Mayo signed with Dallas before last season.
Evans will bring energy and rebounding to their second unit. The future draft pick could end up being rather low if Brooklyn dramatically improve.
Memphis are having a poor season and it may have convinced them to do this deal. A 3-7 start isn't a good base to build on towards the playoffs on.

Wall: "I'm in the form of my life"
John Wall has always felt the immense pressure that goes with being a number one pick. But this season he seems to be fulfilling his vast potential.
With an improved support cast around him at the Wizards he has had the burden of carrying the team taken off his shoulders and can just play ball.
He came into this season with career averages of 17.5 points and 8.1 assists per game. This year though he is amazingly doubling his assist average.
Somehow he has managed to increase his assist rate to nearly 16 per game, but only let his scoring drop by about 5 points compared to last season.
It is incredibly rare to see a player averaging more assists than points, especially when their scoring level is 15 per game. But Wall is really doing it.
If he can keep this pace up for the rest of the season he has a great chance to beat John Stockton's record of 14.5 per game in the 1989-90 season.
The player himself is really quick to shy away from any talk of record breaking though, "Nah, I'm not even thinking about and of that stuff", Wall said.
"I'm just looking to play my best and get my teammates involved so that we can win games, improve and hopefully give our fans a nice playoff run."
Recently in Charlotte he broke Kevin Porter's thirty year old franchise record of 24 assists in a single game by dishing out 26 against the Bobcats.
Wall leads the league in assists by a margin of 4 per game over the second placed Goran Dragic. He also has the most turnovers per game though.
He and his teammates will host the Trail Blazers at the Verizon Center tomorrow night and they'll hope to extend their current two game win streak.
