Help needed! Framerate drop! :(

Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:39 am

Hi guys!

I have a huge problem! I've been experiencing some weird frame rate drops.

The game plays very smoothly for a while and then suddenly it gets reaaaaallly lagy for some time. It happens so often, that it's making 2k13 unplayable for me.... I use to have a similar problem with 2k12, but being disconnected from the internet helped then. Now this workaround is not working... around...

When i go to the desktop (alt+tab) and back, then it's fixed for a little while, but having to do that every possession really is annoying.

Has someone else experienced this too?

Thnx!

Is your 2K13 legit?

If going back to the desktop fixes it for a while, I think I know what is happening. Something is overheating. There may be safe guards in place that lower the clock speed of peripherals when they heat up too much.

Search google for a cpu temperature monitor program, run it, and note the temperatures. Run the game, and once the frame rate drops, alt tab to the desktop and look at the temperatures. It could be your video card or your cpu.

It could be something entirely different as well.

SpeedFan is the program I use, give it a try. I had many problems concerning temperatures since the start and by your description it's probably what Pdub speculated. What's your OS? It may even be dust you know! Dust can cause ovrheating problems

Since you have a legit copy and win7 and assuming you don't have multiple programs running in the background, the only things that can cause a problem are a resource-consuming antivirus program or a virus. Check the temperatures with SpeedFan first of all, then take a look for dust inside the PC. You experience that problem only with NBA 2K13? What about previous installments of the series and other games?

I have Avira and my pc should be clean. I have experienced it with 2k12 as well, but disconnecting from the Internet helped then....

Does SpeedFan adjust anything or just shows data? If it does, does it change anything by default?

'cuz I launched it and played one game and I didn't have any stuttering (and I also changed config file and used albys 2.0 roster & settings - but these things have not made a differences before with this problem). The temperatures rose, but how much would be normal? I have to give it a few more tries, before making any conclusions.

ps should I use the "automatic fan speed" option or change any settings in SpeedFan?

Thanks guys for the support, I'll let you know if I've played a few more games with this in mind!

Honestly, I'm not sure. It could be one of those quantum physics things. Now that you are monitoring it, it behaves fine. Or it it's a placebo and you are not playing the way you usually do.

What temperature values are you getting? There are different thresholds for each type of device.

second straight game without lag.... hm, i don't know what did it, was it SpeedFan or me just blowing real hard in the ventilators a few times, but it seems fine right now! :D
If i have any new info i'll write here, for others with the same issue to see!

Thanks again guys! I was almost ready to give up, real frustrated, been a fan of nba video games for long time... you made my day! NLSC rock on!

I believe that SpeedFan doesn't make automatic changes. Here's a look at my temperatures http://prntscr.com/prwkl @15 degrees room temperature. I haven't configured anything. I have 3 fans and a big one (it has a special name, I don't know it in english though) on the quad core processor (bear in mind that a CPU with less cores or a newer one tends to produce less heat). At summers it doesn't usually exceed 60 degres even when working all day @32-40 degrees. Be sure to check the on-board fan of the graphic cards. The fan of my old GPU had a malfunction and wasn't working for 2 years until the graphics card burned out! Scumbag greek manufacturers
