2012-2013 Season Preview - Boston Celtics

WIth newly added faces to the roster, Doc Rivers will be experimenting with rotations over the course of the preseason.

When the Celtics starting five was subbed out in the final minutes of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, it felt as though we were finally seeing the end of an era. The Boston media began reporting in June that Ray Allen's relationship with Rajon Rondo had finally reached its breaking point and that forward Kevin Garnett may have played his last NBA game. While they did indeed lose Ray Allen to their arch nemesis in the East, the Celtics coaxed Garnett away from retirement talks with a 3 year, $34 million dollar contract and showed that they were serious about reloading rather than rebuilding. The question still remains however whether it will be enough to make another run at the finals.

The biggest acquisition of the summer for General Manager Danny Ainge was the signing of Jason "JET" Terry and trading for Rockets guard Courtney Lee. While they'll never be quite the shooters that Ray Allen was, the Celtics no doubt feel comfortable with their guard rotation heading into the season. Both are more dynamic players at this point in their careers and will bring a dynamic to the team that coach Doc Rivers hasn't had since '08. Jason Terry's ability to create offense for himself off the dribble and his ability to play point guard off the bench finally gives the Celtics the Sixth Man they've been looking for since Posey left 5 years ago. Add to that Courtney Lee's defensive capabilities and athleticism and it seems as though Boston has more than made up for the loss.

The draft was also very kind to this Boston team. Ohio forward Jared Sullinger was a consensus top 5 prospect before red flags related to his back caused him to fall all the way to the 21st pick. Bringing in a player of this talent is a no brainer and if he can stay healthy, Danny Ainge may have grabbed himself the steal of the draft. His weight however will remain a question mark as well as his lack of length and vertical as it may make it difficult to finish at the rim against NBA level bigs. With the 22nd pick in the draft, the Celtics also added Syracuse center Fab Melo to their team. While he is a legitimate 7 footer, he is still a very raw player who will benefit greatly from learning under the wing of Kevin Garnett over the course of a season. Until he can add NBA ready defense to his game however, it is doubtful he'll get too many minutes on a team that thrives on their ability to play stifling defense.

The heart related injuries to Jeff Green and eventually Chris Wilcox were big setbacks for the Celtics during last season. Celtic doctors detected an aortic aneurysm prior to preseason and were able to prevent any serious issues later on in the season. Chris Wilcox's heart problem didn't occur until around halfway throughout the season. In the short time he was healthy though, he proved that he could be a valuable big to the Celtics rotation and someone willing to run the fast break with Rondo. It'll be a good story this year to see both have a successful return after such serious injuries.

The biggest question mark of the offseason may be the addition of Darko Milicic for the veteran minimum. While Darko is still dealing with the pressure of being drafted second in a draft featuring Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh, there is no better place for him to maximize his talent than in Boston. Doc Rivers is considered around the league as one of the best coaches in the league and someone who is capable of getting 110% out of his talent if they are willing to put in the effort. If Darko Milicic is able to find his love for the game of basketball and shake off the pressure of his draft position, he could be the Celtics go to big off the bench.

While the Celtic bench looks deep, the teams fate still rests in the hands of its core three players. Rajon Rondo played phenominal in the playoffs and even looked confident in his shooting. If he can make his free throws and three point shots the same way he was able to in the playoffs, we may be hearing his name mentioned in MVP talks around the league. Kevin Garnett is currently 36 years old and despite his great play in the playoffs, we have to wonder if this is the year we'll see a drop in his effectiveness on defense. Same goes for Paul Pierce, who was limited by an ACL injury for the second half of Boston's run. Injuries are going to be a concern and if either of these two miss significant time this season, the Celtics will no doubt struggle.

With all of this said, the Celtics will once again be a dominant force in the East. However, taking out the Heat will be a huge challenge for them. With the injury to Derrick Rose, the Heat don't have much competition in the East and this Boston Celtics squad could be the only one that poses a legitimate threat to another title. If the Celtics can make it to the postseason with their roster intact, they will once again be a team that will go far into the playoffs. Whether it'll be enough to bring in Banner 18 in June is another question entirely.
