Philly has signed Kwame Brown to a 2-year, $6M deal. Apparently Doug wants to start him at the 5 and move Hawes over to the 4.
Now that's a killer frontcourt. Wow. Just wow.
Sat Jul 14, 2012 9:36 am
Good for Kwame; despite his bust label, he continues to get work. I hope he breaks the Joe Smith/Chucky Brown/Tony Massenburg/Jim Jackson record at some point.
Sat Jul 14, 2012 9:43 am
How does he continue to get that work? He must be doing something. Hey maybe he'll go back to his Laker days, decent play if he starts.

he is a big. you could ask that same question about many of the bigs in the nba now and in its past
Sat Jul 14, 2012 1:21 pm
He wouldn't be viewed as horrible if he wasn't picked #1. He's worthy of a contract, in fact I actually "wanted" him back in Charlotte. He's a serviceable center who is pretty much better than Desagana Diop in every possible way.

The Rockets offerd Lin a 3 year deal worth $25 million. The third year would even be a $15 million. Linsanity is not for free anymore

The Knicks are expected to match this, it would cost them a huge tax in year 3.
Sat Jul 14, 2012 6:34 pm
I would just really hope NYK won't match it. With the departure of our PGs, we need him.
And if Lin goes to HOU, he would be reunited with Toney Douglas.

I'm not that surprised that he's still getting gigs in the league, as Sauru noted that's the way it goes with bigs. I am a little surprised at the size of the contracts he continues to receive, though. It's not that overpaying for bigs is unheard of, but I'd have thought at this point he'd be left with little choice but to accept the veteran minimum or something in the $2-3 million range for one year, tops.

I was actually hoping we'd see Joe Smith suit up for at least one more game with a new team, just so that he could stand alone in the record books.

The fact worth looking at here is that the Sixers amnestied Brand, which ended up saving them $2.1M (that's how much the Mavs are paying him). They take that cash, add $900K this season and $3M next season to sign Kwame Brown and reportedly want to pair him up with Hawes in the starting lineup. I miss the Brand-Hawes pair already and it was pretty terrible, especially in the playoffs, so that's saying something. Anyway, the Sixers management is being really weird this offseason - some moves are smart and seem to fill our needs, some make me wonder what the hell they are thinking. Hard to guess what direction they're heading in as well - bringing in Nick Young, Wright and especially Harkless would indicate they want to trade Iguodala, supposedly for a PF. But no, they sign Kwame and want to make Hawes the PF (recipe for disaster, but that's another story). Of course, there's still an idea of trading Iggy for expiring contracts, trade exceptions and 2nd round picks - stupid and probably just as likely to happen as keeping him. I still think they should be trying to trade Thad instead, if anyone would be willing to take his contract on. There's just not much of any value that we can get for Iggy - otherwise he would have been traded a long time ago. And he's still our best player here and now and the heart of our defense, so he should stay unless we want to be a top5 lottery team. Don't know about other Philly fans, but I'm sick and tired of the constant rebuilding since the day Iverson was traded.

Well apparently, the Knicks will let Jeremy Lin walk.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/8168185/2012-nba-free-agency-new-york-knicks-match-jeremy-lin-houston-rockets-offer-sheet-source-saysWell at least the Knicks don't have to pay Lin an huge amount of money in the 2014-15 season, and they get Raymond Felton back in a sign and trade deal with Portland.
Mon Jul 16, 2012 12:31 pm
As I said in the Knicks thread, overpaying for Lin seems like the better option to me. If Lin wanted to stay, seems to me he should've agreed to terms with the Knicks when he had the chance.
Melo's comment about the contract being ridiculous is a little on the nose in my opinion. Then again, he should know a thing or two about ridiculous contracts.
Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:05 pm
Does Melo realize the Knicks were a very good team right before he got there and that mere .500 Denver Nuggets flourished right after his departure? Lolz. He should rather be thanking Lin for saving his ass last season. The Knicks were 8-15 before Linsanity.
Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:10 pm
He kind of has a point about the contract of course, but it's a bit coarse to just come out and say that. I'm not sure that he'll necessary earn the $24 million he'll be getting this season.
Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:14 pm
I guess so. Though I believe the Rockets are also paying for the possible revenue Lin will attract on top of his potential.
Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:17 pm
He may not earn it with his on the court performance but I am sure he will more than make up for it will jersey sales and selling seats. People seem to love this guy more than anything. If he is even a quarter as popular as he was last season he will make money for whatever team he plays for. The thing is does that team want to actually try to win a ring? If they do then this is a horrible contract. Personally I don’t think the knicks will win anything with or without him. As for what melo said, I feel what they pay him is ridiculous but that’s cause I feel he is not a max type player. Then again I feel most of the nba is not max worthy
Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:20 pm
I wouldn't say horrible. Jerome James, Eddy Curry, those were horrible contracts.

And more ESPN/TNT/ABC appearances, if it can be added.

Sam Amick: As @Aaron Brooks - free agent point guard Aaron Brooks - just tweeted, source confirms he has agreed to sign with the Kings.

Edit: Jamison to Lakers, yay!

Solid moves for both teams there.

OJ Mayo
@JuiceMayo32
I will be signing with dallas! #Mavsnation
A consolation prize for Dallas, if this turns out.
Tue Jul 17, 2012 2:22 pm
the Mavs have quietly built a decent team after getting decimated by free agent snubs.
C- Kaman/Wright
PF- Dirk/Brand/Yi
SF- Marion/DahntayJones
SG- Carter/Mayo/DoJo
PG- Collison/West(FA)/Beaubois
Tue Jul 17, 2012 2:35 pm
Not terribly impressed. Mavs will be the 7 or 8 seed with that team as long as Dirk stays healthy, but I don't see them winning a series. Another transitional year as they try for Dwight, I guess.
Love the signing of Jamison for the Lakers. He instantly becomes their best bench player (or starting SF?) in a Harrington-type role. Aaron Brooks may be a bargain - nice low-risk, possibly high reward grab.
Tue Jul 17, 2012 2:50 pm
the Mavs have a good offseason moves despite of unsuccessful chance to land D Will but they still need to strengthen their defense with that lineup

not many big names per se, but a lot of formerly productive players who can help them make a run if they can channel their former selves.
Tue Jul 17, 2012 4:30 pm
First Nash and now Jamison, I don't think Mike Brown would be pleased with his defense overall.

But anyway, it's a good move by the Lakers.
