The Brooklyn Nets have come to terms with the Atlanta Hawks on a multiplayer trade that will land them All-Star guard Joe Johnson in exchange for several players with expiring contracts, according to sources briefed on the discussions.

The Nets reached a handshake agreement with the Hawks, after talks between the teams all weekend, while officials from the Dallas Mavericks were meeting face-to-face in New York with Nets star Deron Williams, this summer's marquee free agent.

The deal as it stands, as reported Sunday night by ESPN.com, calls for the Nets to send the expiring contracts of Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, Anthony Morrow and Jordan Williams along with DeShawn Stevenson (via sign-and-trade) and a future first-round pick (lottery-protected in 2013 via Houston) to Atlanta in exchange for Johnson. This trade construction allows the Nets to meet two of their key objectives, as they managed to keep promising guard MarShon Brooks out of the trade as well as retain their own first-round pick in 2013.

Maybe they're assuming if Derron Williams will go to Dallas, still they have a primary scorer., On the other hand if they get Johnson maybe Derron will not leave. But whatever the reason its a bad shot getting up Johnson, they don't need guards, they have an upcoming 2 guard, maybe what they need is a solid bench player.. To back them up. Like harden or Gordon..

Johnson's contract aside, it's not a completely terrible deal for the Nets. He remains a talented player and with their chances of bringing Dwight Howard in seemingly slim, it's fair enough that they try to do what they can to re-group and keep Deron Williams around. Supposedly his choices are between the Nets and Mavericks and to be honest, the Mavericks don't look like they're going to be in amazing shape even if he signs there, so it's probably not a bad pitch.

The Hawks aren't getting too bad a deal for him. More importantly, they're getting expiring contracts in return, some of which are probably going to be bought out anyway. Good move for them moving forward.

It kept Deron Williams in town, so I guess it achieved its purpose. If the rumblings of a Howard deal still being a possibility are at all true, I'd say we'll likely all forget how bad a couple of those contracts look.

It's not impossible, but basically is. The Nets now have a hard cap and Orlando doesn't seem interested in anything they can offer.

for me, i think getting johnson with his huge contract and giving that kind of amount is just too much consumption on nets cap space. how will they add big players with their now limited cap.

They're definitely not championship contenders, but they should have the talent to at least sneak into the Playoffs, perhaps even snag the 5th or 6th seed. They are overpaying a couple of players, but said players are still good.

They don't need "cap" to get Howard. They just have to get Orlando and another team to take a package that includes Lopez and Humphries.

if that's what your brain is telling you, no big deal..really, brooklyn nets are now being recognized..from being a lottery team, billy king+proky changed that in just about 1-2 years..

Previously buying the team, Russian owner said that he'd pay to become a winner. And it seems he's sticking to his word, but I don't really think now's the time with Joe and Gerald. Are they a playoffs contender now? I'd say it's an interesting experiment sort of like the Knicks.

what's the guy supposed to do? moving the nets to a new city, he had to make these big moves. if not to sell the fans/media, then to keep deron williams. what is your suggestion for the nets offseason plan?

The problem is that I don't see neither of them as a proven all star, but more of borderline at best even when they were at their best. And certainly I would consider them as over the hill players. There are lots of other quality players out there, possibly at cheaper cost. By that, I don't mean they're not improved nor their roster doesn't look respectable. But the cap space isn't appealing anymore. It makes it harder to sign Howard now, which I thought was very important. Certainly not impossible, but I think things could have been better if the moves were smarter. Overall, this is no guarantee team, more like the Knicks than the Heat, whereas the Heat knew what they were getting when they put the team together. But the Nets look more randomly put together, and this is why it's going to be interesting to watch how all this goes down.

the only money well spent for Brooklyn as of now in terms of hiring players is Dwill's contract. and joe for me is just a good player. and acquiring him with that amount is not a pretty smart financial move for me. Gwallace is too for me overpaid. i like crash, but he's aging and giving that kind of money for me is too much.

I know that they are going on a retooling stage and im excited about that, but when i saw the move on Johnson im like what? overpaid? getting him is good, but with his salary, its just bad financial move for me.
the only team that i think can get Dhoward in player exchange wise is LA. though he's been voicing that he wants Brooklyn, Orl dont want just Lopez, they want more and nets cant give no more aside from humpries, another overpaid.

I have to agree to some of your points there, bout the borderline thing. maybe you can say that they are declining(stats wise) quality support players, BUT they were not used properly on their previous teams, crash was a 6th/7th/8th man on the blazers rotation,JJ was the only player who can make plays for atl(never played w/ a great PG), he was BEASTING before w/ nash in PHX(ave. like 25pts/game on just spot-up shooting), thus atl offered him this atrocious contract but never got his full potential there(iso-joe). maybe crash won't be an allstar this season but JJ(6th time allstar?), i think he will drastically improve playing next to dwill..about the cap space, they've gambled all of their assets to have their star going to brooklyn w/c is deron, that was just one of their objective w/ or w/o dwight, deron must be a net, adding JJ,crash, and POSSIBLY(still they are the frontrunners) dwight. if your a GM of other teams, you will really feel jealous about that, mainly because of proky..now that jameer returns to ORL, and JJ redick also, it's clearly to say that dwight won't be in ORL this season. There were reports about jameer & dwight having those arguments and even physical contacts(5'6 vs 6'11?) last season, they really dont like playing w/ each other now(mainly because of this dramma DH made)..even crash & dwill approved to take less money on their first years of contract in order to create space for dwight, add also the reduced salary they've offered to mirza(euro best player last season), i know i'm not billy king, but i can say these are works of a very competent GM(for having those chances of acquiring those players)..

ok, my goal is not to change other peoples mindset w/ this current nets team, my point is about better information about this tea. But let's see who's gonna eat crows this coming season..bobcats=brooklyn nets?
