Ken Berger: Source confirms Rockets have agreed to a three-year, $25.1M offer sheet with restricted free agent Omer Asik of the Bulls.
Bulls will have three days to match after July 11th.
Third year of the contract will be near $15 million.

So much for the new CBA changing anything. Good job, good effort!

Please no. As much as I like Asik defensively, I don't think he's ready to be a starter, if that's what the Rockets have in mind with that much money.

lol the Rockets chucked away any shot at Dwight Howard in favor of Omer Asik.

You can gamble for Howard and lose even if you get him... So it's a smart move, to look for other options.

A smart move to look at other options, but not to overpay for Asik like that. I like Asik, I think he still has promise and I was hoping that the Bulls could find a way to keep him as a backup to Noah. Definitely not at that price, though.

This is madness!!!
So he's the first guy to get overpaid this offseason. Roy Hibbert obviously going to be one of them. Who else do you guys think will get overpaid?
Tue Jul 03, 2012 12:51 pm
get over it. RFA's get overpaid. same with UFA's. and UFO's... even with this new CBA. The only way Houston could have pryed away Asik from the bulls was to offer a backloaded, albeit ridiculous, contract like that.
Last yeart he bulls offered their full MLE to Reddick and Orlando still matched it even though it put them in the luxury tax bigtime. How about them fancy PER and TS numbers Reddick put up last year lol
Still holding out hope on a S & T with Asik

Good pay for him... hey, what? 9M for a year? Too much for this free throw missa!

Who's Omar Asik?
In all seriousness, this isn't a bad deal. Chicago won't be able to match and if he doesn't live up to the standard of past Rockets centers (Chucky Hayes, Sam Dalembert, Camby), he's only signed for three years.

Man, you guys are jerks for editing all your posts to make it look like I screwed up the title.

It's bit ironic, because as much as I hate the sound of 8-8-9, for some reason 5-5-15 sounds bit better to me. At least for 2 years, he's adequately paid and could become an expiring contract at the end of his contract even if he doesn't make $10 mil worth of improvement.
Wed Jul 04, 2012 4:31 am
Asik isn't worth that much, his good defensive presence can't save his terrible offensive game and bad free throw percentage. Oh well...
Wed Jul 04, 2012 7:42 am
For sure he's not worth that much. If we could take Courtney lee for asik via sign and trade or at least another exchange for him, it would be good, otherwise ,I couldn't even think of overpaying a great defender with no offensive game at all.

Thanks, I'd almost forgotten about that.

There's merit to that. Should they feel the need to trade him in the next couple of years, his contract is fairly reasonable and then it becomes very valuable to anyone seeking cap relief, whether it ends up being the Rockets or someone else.
I am still a bit surprised that he was so sought after, that someone would offer a contract like that to pry him from the Bulls. Bigs do get overpaid and to be fair this isn't exactly the worst contract someone's ever received, but I didn't think there'd be that much enthusiasm for his services.

Consider the fA class for centers- hibbert, hawes, kaman. Asik's age, defensive prowess, and lack of injury history put him #2 on that list

True, good point.

Yeah, that was exactly what I had in my mind when I said that. You don't have to remind us mistakes of the past...
