Dunk Contest 2012 - Chase, Jeremy, Paul, Derrick

I want Paul George to win, but I have the feeling he is going to be this year's Iguodala.

Why is Budinger in the contest? He had a total of 6 dunks this season, and most of them were easy 2 handers.

To be fair, the dunk contest doesn't need to be filled with big names and aside from a couple of the early contests that were star heavy, that hasn't been the case. You had a couple of big names and some other prominent dunkers. Some of the really entertaining contests have featured players that weren't much more than standout young players on the rise but not quite established names just yet. That's kind of how this field is, though probably a little more obscure than usual.

Big names help build hype for the contest but as long as the competitors come out with some cool stuff, it doesn't really matter. Kenny Walker wasn't a star in the league but his performance in 1989 was impressive. The only things of note that Terance Stansbury and Harold Miner did in their NBA careers came in the NBA Finals but what they did there was fairly memorable. Kenny Smith and Brent Barry had solid careers, but they weren't superstars.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blown away by the field or the change in format. Still, there's athleticism and creativity in the field, so I think we'll see a few impressive dunks.

i am less concerned with who is in the contest than by the new format of it. fan voting only proves 1 thing, the best will not will. it will be a popularity contest now. with how popular lin is right now he could enter do 3 lay ups and get 80% of the vote to win

Im picking Iman Shumpert to win he's probably the most athletic there...

If they were going to change the format of the contest, they should have made it include more than 4 contestants.

I don't like the format. Since Shumpert's from New York & Lin will assist him in a dunk, he'll get the most votes for sure.

It's probably not going to be an issue with this field, seeing how it's comprised of role players that are about equal in popularity and recognition. Whoever ends up grabbing everyone's attention with the most impressive attempt will get the votes, so it'll ultimately work out.

I would prefer to have judges though. If they want to have fan voting, I'd prefer it to be to pick the competitors from a shortlist in the first place. Have a shortlist of players interested in competing, announce them along with video packages showing off what they can do and the fans will vote in the players that are most impressive. Then let judges score the contest.

Great news as Jeremy Evans is probably the best dunker in the league, and Shump would have won by default if Lin were involved.
