Grizzlies Rout Blazers, Take Game One
Zach Randolph questionable for rest of series after shoulder injury

Image
Dunks were prominent in Rudy Gay's arsenal this game...

Memphis 114, Portland 84

May 29, 2012; Memphis, TN - "We just never seemed to be playing as well as them", said Nate McMillan in the post-game press conference. You could honestly take that as the recap as that pretty much says it all.

Outscoring the Blazers in the first two quarters by six points each, and the latter two by nine each, Memphis dominated this game from start to finish. Portland stayed in the game early on thanks to Patrick Mills "exploding" for 11 points thanks to his team high 7 free throws. However, Portland's offense was no match for the Grizzlies. "In the first, it was [Rudy] Gay, then it was [Zach Randolph], and then Mayo in the second half", complained assistant coach Dean Demopaulos after the game.

Unfortunately for Grizzlies fans, they could not fully enjoy the victory. Star power forward Zach Randolph hurt his shoulder in the third quarter and did not return. The all-star is questionable for game 2. Injuries have been no stranger to the Blazers, missing two starters and their sixth man themselves. "It's just part of the game. If Zach can't play, then he can't play", said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins.

In just 16 minutes, Randolph was huge for Memphis, scoring 17 points on 8-11 shooting and grabbing 7 boards. Memphis got excellent performances out of all five starters, and also had 9 players score at least 7 points. The Blazers meanwhile committed 26 turnovers, and were led by LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 19 points and 4 blocks.

Game 2 will take place on Tuesday in Memphis. If Randolph is not cleared to play, Darrell Arthur will start in his place.

Grizzlies lead series 1-0.

Suprised to see you go down so hard, but with Randolph out, and Roy possibly back in, Game 2 should have a closer result, at the least.

MRI Reveals Separated Shoulder For Randolph
Grizzlies' Star expected to miss rest of series

Image The Blazers (without Gerald Wallace, Wesley Matthews, Brandon Roy) aren't the only ones with injury woes in the Western Conference Finals. Amid their dominant 30 point game 1 win, second leading scorer and all-star Zach Randolph went down with a shoulder injury. Team doctors say it's separated, and that Randolph would be out of action "at least until the Finals", said coach Lionel Hollins. "We aren't going to make any excuses with their injuries, but if we lose, we didn't have Zach..."

Roy: "I'm playing in game 2."
Roy To Come Off Bench, Is "Roughly 90%"

Image Oft-injured Blazers guard Brandon Roy told Ben Golliver (of Blazer's Edge) yesterday that he would play in game 2 against the Grizzlies. "Nate cleared me to play. I'm roughly 90% but I always give 110% anyway so I'm ready to go. Elliot's going to start I think but I'm playing in game 2." This news comes on the heels of the "good" news for the Blazers that Zach Randolph had separated his shoulder and would likely be out for the series. Roy is averaging a shade under 16 points along with 6.5 assists and 3 rebounds per game in these playoffs.

Blazers Tie Series Behind Roy's Vintage Game
Brandon Roy Returns From Injury To Light Up Grizzlies

Image
Carl Landry was an X-Factor off the bench

Portland 94, Memphis 89

May 31, 2012; Memphis, TN - Brandon Roy returned from an injury and while he claimed he was only 90%, he looked more like 110%! He came off the bench for Elliot Williams and his shot was on from the beginning. With a team-high 16 points at the half, he led the Blazers to a ten point lead.

Memphis staged a comeback in the third quarter. The Blazers continued to have trouble containing Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo while the Grizzlies' double teaming was effective on Roy. The fourth quarter was close throughout. LaMarcus Aldridge started to carry the team on offense, while Ronnie Turiaf had a great game and was kept in for hustle and defensive purposes (over Oden!) A clutch three by Raymond Felton (who has been woefully inefficient in these playoffs, in spite of the team's success) sealed the game. The Trail Blazers win it, 94-89 and tie the series going home.

The Grizzlies were without Zach Randolph, who is likely to miss the rest of the series with his shoulder injury sustained in game 1. "That's no excuse," said Grizzlies' coach and former Blazer player Lionel Hollins. "They're without an all-star too in Gerald Wallace and Matthews is also out. Our defense was inexcusable. Inexcusable indeed as the Blazers scored 94 points on just 61 attempts from the field.

Roy had an 25 points on incredible efficiency while Aldridge chipped in 23 for Portland. Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo carried the scoring load for Memphis with 22 and 21 respectively. With the win, the Blazers take home court advantage in this series, and the next two games of this series will be played at the Rose Garden in Portland.

Series tied 1-1.
