NBA players pick the league's top floppers

Postby Andrew on Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:51 pm

The results, according to 152 players surveyed in a Sports Illustrated poll:

1. Anderson Varejao
2. Manu Ginobili
3. Luis Scola
4. Derek Fisher
5. Kevin Martin
6. Shane Battier
7. Jarron Collins
8. Raja Bell
9. Jose Barea
10. Andres Nocioni
11. Reggie Evans
12. Corey Maggette
13. Kobe Bryant
14. Paul Pierce
15. Sasha Vujavic

Not too many surprises on the list, I think the top four in particular would match most fan's observations. Jarron Collins isn't someone who would've come immediately to mind though, not being a particularly prominent player or someone who gets a lot of minutes (he also hasn't played for the Jazz since 2009). I wouldn't have expected Kobe to rank amongst the top 15 either; like all stars who are prolific scorers he'll get his share of superstar calls, soft shooting fouls, generous continuations and the like, but I wouldn't say he's a flopper. Derek Fisher, on the other hand...

I'd put Manu top on my list. Manu flops even if there was no contact at all. I've seen that couple time.

As for others below #4, yeah it's bit odd to see Kobe Bryant. As for Wade not being on the list, it's understandable since he at least draws a lot of contact with his playing style.

Battier? K-Mart? Number 1 is not surprising.

Thought to see Dirk on this list. The Argentinian share of guys is highly visible.

Should've been Manu first, then Andy. Sasha Vujabiatch should've been higher too. Manu flops when nobody's even near him. Flopping should be a technical next season.

Come to think of it, I thought Bell would've been higher. I'd still say that he's a quality defensive player, as are others on the list, but they're not above a little acting. Case in point:

What happened to the fine that could be imposed after the game if the replay showed a player flopped?

edit* screw you for this thread andrew, i should be going to bed but instead watched youtube clips of floppers for 15minutes :(

Yeah, I'd say that beats Ginobili/Bell. At least there was contact for them to try and sell.

Guess I don't pay much attention to Scola's flops when watching Rockets' games because he didn't exactly strike me as a flopper, but he is Argentinian after all and came over from Europe...

Putting Kobe up there is ridiculous, as it is with Shane Battier....

Paul Pierce should swap places with Derek Fisher and Raja Bell needs to get up a few spots too. First and second place looks about right though, although I reckon they should be tied for first

I think Fisher's worthy of being top five. He's a master at scooting over at the last second and selling contact. Battier's inclusion doesn't surprise me, as I said players like him and Raja Bell are quality defensive players but they're also adept at acting a little to get charging calls.

I haven't really seen Paul Pierce flop so much. Well maybe except for all of his fake injuries. :D

Defensively speaking I wouldn't have thought of Pierce as one of the biggest floppers in the league but offensively speaking, he's a master when it comes to pivoting into a defender, drawing contact and then attempting a shot to get the shooting foul call. It's cheap, but as long as they're calling it that way it's a smart play and you can't fault him for being savvy enough to pull it off time after time.
