Shopping for a Small Forward?

Image

The 2020 free agency is proving to be one of the most intriguing off-seasons in the last 10 years. The position that will be the focal point will be small forward. Any team looking propel themselves from first round fodder to contenders could very well do so in this position with the talent on sale in 2020. Here are 5 small forwards that stand out:

LeBron James

LeBron is still playing excellent basketball, but he's doing so on a team that keeps falling short. At age 35, he could give it away next season, but I think he'd be more likely to chase that ring he has yet to receive.

Carmelo Anthony

Even though his play has declined since joining the T-Wolves, Melo could still be a game changer for any team looking to make a move in the playoffs in 2021. Unlike LeBron though, he really has nothing left to prove, so he could opt to retire.

Kevin Durant

With his role decreasing by the day, Durant is still young enough to provide a high quality scorer for any team lacking. His offensive game is currently suffering in a system with J.R. Smith and with his large contract off the books this coming free agency, Denver could look to unload Durant in order to keep Perko.

Rudy Gay

He's been playing power forward for San Antonio, but he arguably has the best perimeter shot of all these guys mentioned. He's never really shaped up as a franchise player, but he could be an excellent second option for any team with a young star.

Michael Beasley

Not the biggest name on the list, but he could arguably make the biggest impact, as he has age on his side. Can play both forward positions competently and has one of the best mid-range shots in the league.

Nice summaries. As Andrew said, I think Reed is suited for that sixth man role that still gets a lot of minutes.

It definitely seems that Durant isn't working out as well as he could be. It's early in the season though so I'd give him a chance. The DeAndre Jordan signing looks great right now, hopefully Lopez can get it together sooner rather than later.

As Andrew said, with a 10ppg Durant, it's not going very well, but I'm hoping he can rise again. (Y)

Yeah, it's the role I've assigned for him now. He's a bit too tweenerish to be a starter.

Initially playing this game my plan was to have the bulk of my scoring with my wing players while everyone else is complementary. As I played more, I started working out post moves and pick-and-roll plays and now my game is more of an inside-outside system. Unfortunately Durant's game has suffered because of it. I'm thinking of keeping him til the end of the season and possibly let him go into the free agency.

Jordan has been a definite surprise and it seems like he's as strong as Dwight Howard in this game. Lopez is a good rebounder but he doesn't really have a strong back to the basket game... I don't know, he'll probably come back into prominance at some point.

Thierry • wrote:As Andrew said, with a 10ppg Durant, it's not going very well, but I'm hoping he can rise again. (Y)

He has his moments, but not really what you'd call Kevin Durant moments. He's still a gun in the clutch, so that's a positive.

5 Game Summary

After a few hiccups in the previous 5 games, Denver made no mistake this time around going 5-0. The Nuggets bounced back with an emphatic win over the Cavaliers and continued on their charge with victory over the Sixers. After the feature game, they demoralised Portland and had a close one with the Warriors. Now onto the feature game, which was against Carmelo Anthony and the Minnesota Timberwolves:

Denver Overcome Minnesota In Another OT Game

Image

After going to OT against Portland the previous round, Denver have managed to prevail in extra time again with an 87-83 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Down by 6 with less than 1:30 on the clock, Kevin Durant hit two clutch threes to bring the game back level. He had an opportunity to win it off a mid-range jumper, but it missed to send it to overtime.

From there, Denver's execution couldn't be faulted, as J.R. Smith (23) and Kevin Durant (18) took care of a fatigued Minnesota lineup. The Wolves had 5 players in double-digits, but the glaring stat was that Carmelo Anthony only hit his first field goal of the game in OT. He had just 5 in the entire outing.

Cameron Robin led the way for the Timberwolves with 19 points, while Curt McNamara wasn't far behind with 18. Brady Lee (12 points 13 rebounds) and Bertrand Hofmann (12 points 12 rebounds) both registered double-doubles, while bench big man Alexis Ajinca made a useful contribution with 11.

Denver are now 2-0 in OT games for the year.

MVP Mode
Image
J.R. Smith absolutely destroyed the Portland Trail Blazers. He scored 42 points and proved that he's still worth a mention in the MVP race... if he's not the front runner that is.

Another Perk For Denver
Image
Borislav Perko continued his excellent form with a 22 point, 10 rebound effort against the Cavaliers. He has developed into a one of the league's most versatile big men, with great passing ability and now has a consistent mid-range jumpshot in his arsenal.

Breakout Game
Image
After labelling him as just a hustle guy, Aaron Watters came out with a big performance against the Warriors. He filled the stat-line with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 2 steals. He's also the best free throw shooting centre in the team, making him quite an asset in the clutch moments.

Sorry T-Mac Fans
Image
Rudy Fernandez is continuing to be a handy contributor off the bench. He scored 16 points against the Sixers and is likely to keep stealing minutes away from the struggling Taylor MacKenzie.

Strong five game stretch. Good to see Durant scoring a little more in the OT win, 15-18 ppg would probably be an acceptable contribution from him at this point of his career.

November 2019 Review

Despite a couple of hiccups, Denver have started the league the way they finished off last season as the top side in the NBA. Two of their losses were big ones, going down to Utah and Phoenix by 15 and 17 respectively, but they're not a team that stays down for long. J.R. Smith has been at the forefront of Denver's success, as he is coming 3rd in the league in scoring (22ppg) and 2nd in steals (1.8spg). He finds himself 2nd in the MVP race behind the reigning award winner Ollie Rose.

As much as Earl has been the star, Borislav Perko has been arguably as valuable as him on the team. He is currently the top contender for the Most Improved Player. If he keeps up his stellar play, he could also find himself in contention for an also spot. His all-round play in the post in combination with Smith's dynamic perimeter shooting is causing headaches for the opposition and puts Denver in a good position to 4-peat.

He was firing up bricks the entire game but the Wolves have a surprisingly balanced side. He is 35 in this dynasty, so that probably has a lot to do with his decline.

Andrew wrote:Strong five game stretch. Good to see Durant scoring a little more in the OT win, 15-18 ppg would probably be an acceptable contribution from him at this point of his career.

I think I'm not starting to incorporate him a little better. I'm starting to control him a little more off the ball by hitting L2 and his player icon (Axel or Phil89 could help me out to what the feature is called). I'm enjoying the fact that I'm discovering new ways to use different features even after playing this game for over a year now.

Thierry • wrote:Nice to see Perko developing a mid-range jumper. (Y)

It's becoming a big part of his game. I knew if he could hit it consistently he could become a star because he can back people down as well as anyone on the team.

5 Game Summary

The Nuggets were unable to replicate their last perfect round, but they still had a good one with a 4-1 record. Their loss was in the first game against LeBron's Suns and they ended up losing big behind a lackluster offensive performance. This would however awaken a beast within the ranks and they went on to win their next game against Sacramento. After the feature game, wins came pretty easily against Eastern Conference teams the Sixers and the Celtics. The game of this round is against the Hawks in Atlanta. The Hawks have started the year off strong and hope to continue on their form:

Dynamic Duo Outlast Hawks

Image

The Denver Nuggets managed to overcome the Hawks in a close 91-88 encounter thanks to big performances from J.R. Smith and Kevin Durant. Smith went on to win the performer of the game with an outstanding effort of 37 points. Coming off a 36 point outing against the Kings, Kevin Durant continued on his return to the limelight with 25 points of his own. With the wing superstars shining, Borislav Perko took up the third scoring role with 14 points to help consolidate the win.

For the Hawks, there was no individual brilliance, but 5 players shared the scoring load. Bench point guard Stephen David led the way with 18 points and 6 assists. Joshua O'Brien scored 15, while Russell Westbrook chipped in with 14. Despite averaging only 2 points per game on the season, centre Bradley Kortig stepped up with 13 points, but the big story of the night was Edmund Vincett's average night. He is third in the MVP race and averages almost 20 points per game, but against the Nuggets he could only manage 10.

This was the second close encounter Denver had with the Hawks this season, as the first game was decided by only 4 points.

After struggling to find form earlier in the season, Kevin Durant had a huge game against the Kings to hopefully kick-start his campaign. He scored 36 points against Sacramento.

Taylor MacKenzie also came back into form against the Philadelphia 76ers. He scored 16 off the bench and proved that the fight for rotation position isn't over yet.

Silver Lining

I felt like I had to have a big performance or two with KD. Seems like I'm doing him an injustice in this dynasty but hey, I guess if the wins are there, that's really what matters. T-Mac is indecisive about the stache, hence he's inconsistent in his play :P

Thierry • wrote:Yep, the Suns defeated you but then you were on fire (Y) Great KD-JR duo.

I think it's more so Oden that kills me in this game. He's a ridiculously strong rebounder, which I guess is not unlike real life... him playing every game however is proof of NBA Live 10's unrealistic nature

I love it when KD and JR tear teams apart together :)

Andrew wrote:Better outing for Durant against the Kings. Good to see the Bulls atop the East, too. Looks like you're in for another 60+ win season.

It's kind of interesting how a couple of things in this season are correlating with real life. The two that stand out to me are the Bulls being on top and Kevin Love being one of the league's top rebounders (if memory serves me correct, he's never been that prominant in my dynasty). 60 wins would be fantastic :)

5 Game Summary

Similar to the last 5 game summary, Denver started off with a loss in their first game against the Bucks. This game was more flattering than the Suns loss as it was only by 5 points this time around. A prospect showed off his potential in the win against Houston and in the next game emerged as the game winner in the feature against New Orleans. After three relatively close games, the Nuggets dished out some tough love against the Thunder and the Warriors. Now for the feature game... would you believe it was another OT epic? This time it was played in Denver against the Hornets:

New Hero Emerges in OT Win

Image

Denver managed to out-muscle New Orleans in overtime with a 83-75 win. However, it was close to being the game that got away. With 11 seconds left on the clock, Denver had one last play to either send it into overtime. It wasn't the prettiest play you'll ever see, but it got the desired result as unlikely hero Aaron Watters hit the shot to send it into OT:

phpBB [video]

This was just one moment in what was a career night for Watters as he had 22 points and 13 rebounds to be the performer of the game. He managed to overshadow Kevin Durant, who scored a team high 24. J.R. Smith struggled to find his game as he only put up 13 points, 10 less than his season average of 23.

For the New Orleans Hornets, they had four double figure scorers with Pablo Carlos leading the way with 19. Rufus Baylor was the next best with 14, while Rex Collins had 13 points to go with his 7 assists. Off-season recruit Lawrence Coutts proved to be an enforcer once again with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. His defensive presense kept Borislav Perko to a modest 8 points.

With this performance, Aaron Watters has had 2 consecutive games where he has tallied a 20-10 stat-line.

Where the 10 Game Review Fails
Image
In light of his recent performances, I realise I was hasty in calling Aaron Watters a "Mark Madsen type". The reality is, the guy has one hell of a jumpshot, which makes him completely unique to anything Denver have really had in this dynasty. Sure, with Aldridge and Nowitzki they're had two great 7-foot shooters, but neither of them played the centre position. With Watters in the game, Denver have the ability to have 5 shooters on the floor at once.

Still Pleading His Case
Image
Amidst the hype around Aaron Watters, J.R. Smith was able to slip under the radar a little. He's still playing at an MVP standard though and he proved this as he scored 30 against the Warriors. Earl has some excellent help, but his presense on the team has turned them into a franchise going for a 4th consecutive title. Perhaps he deserves another MVP trophy.

SAXAMAPHONE!
Image
Ed Reed had been rather quiet up til his performance against the Thunder, where he tallied 29 points. Denver has been getting the wins, but with Reed in form he can turn the game into a laugher within minutes.

A Hot Hand On A Cold Team
Image
One thing you can say about Borislav Perko is that he always turns up ready to play... even if his teammates aren't. It seems that he thrives when the rest of Denver is ice cold, as he put up 21 points and 8 rebounds in a losing effort against the Milwaukee Bucks. You can't help but think that if he was playing for a terrible team, his numbers would be phenominal.

Watters is a diamond in the rough! It seems like you tried to tie the game with Jennings but you went to Watters as a last resort in that video.

Watters was hot the entire game, so I was trying to get a shot for him, but yeah... it ended up being that jumbled mess. Still, he hit the shot and that's all that counted.

Hopefully Durant can keep lighting it up, because him and J.R. are definitely an awesome combination when in full flight.

He's already stolen minutes from Robin Lopez, but now I think I'll have to give him even more time in light of his performances.

And you're right... I'm hoping they draw the Mavs, because atleast there's history of the Nuggets beating them in the playoffs. Thunder or Lakers would be disasterous.

Yeah, the play looked awful but it got the job done. Durant picking up points is always a plus as well. I'm hoping he can keep it up so he can atleast get a bench spot in the all-star game.

Up in the Rafters: Honouring Two Stalwarts of TNL

ImageImage

When you talk about the Nuggets, no two players are a greater embodiment of Denver basketball than Chauncey Billups and Chris "Birdman" Andersen. Both players resemble a story of overcoming some sort of adversity to end up excelling in the NBA. Here's a summary of their storied careers:

The Native

Chauncey Billups not only played his high school and college ball in Colorado, but he was born in Denver as well. Early in his career he was shifted from team-to-team, one of these stops included Denver in 1999. Billups found a meaningful role in the Detroit Pistons squad in their successful early 2000s era and won the Finals MVP as he led them to an NBA Championship over the much favoured Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2008, he returned home to Denver and it was the start of the most successful tenure of his career. He was apart of the first Nuggets three-peat and was instrumental in the first two championships of their third three-peat. In the 2018 NBA Finals, he obliterated the New York Knicks and finished his career on top with the Finals MVP.

With Billups devoting the majority of his basketball life to Denver, it'd be a disservice not to put his number 1 in the rafters.

The Rockstar

Chris Andersen, or as he's lovingly known as "The Birdman" is the only player to win all 6 championships with Denver; but it wasn't all smooth sailing. After being undrafted in 1999, the Birdman started his career in 2001 with the Nuggets after playing in the Development Leagues and China. After a tough start to his career, he ran into more trouble in 2006 where he was expelled from the NBA after violating the drug policy.

Reinstated in 2008, Andersen had a fresh start with the NBA team he started his career with and he was revitalised. Off the bench he was an outstanding shot blocker and he was second in the league in blocks per game (2.42) despite only averaing 20.5 minutes per contest. The next season, he found a starter's spot after Kenyon Martin was traded to the Thunder. He earnt the first of three all-star appearances that year and had reached new heights in his career. Building a reputation as a defensive enforcer, Andersen went on the next season and picked up the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2011.

Birdman is proof that you can come back from just about anything and become a successful player in the league. His hard work and determination whether it'd be on or off the court was greatly appreciated by the franchise and helped build a winning legacy.

Great to see my man Chauncey's number retired. (Y) He and the Birdman (besides Ty and T-Mac's epic 'stache) are the true icons of this dynasty, well-deserved for both players. Birdman showed that it is in fact possible to recover from drug use.
