Dallas Mavericks: Race to a Title

Image

Image

Superstar Maverick Dirk Nowitzki is getting older. His Mavericks have been a playoff team for ten years in a row, and they were title contenders several times. Dirk, 32, is starting to get impatient with the Mavs and warns them that he may move on if the team can't get it together for a title run in the near future. "I've been a Maverick my entire career in the NBA, all thirteen years of it. I don't want that to end, but I want at least a championship to my name before I leave the league."

The Mavericks are a well-built team, yet somehow break down in the playoffs every year. Some say Tyson Chandler is that missing piece, a top center who focuses on defense. But do the Mavs want to take a chance? Why not add another solid player to beef up the roster? Can Donnie Nelson somehow pull off a trade that is sure to propel the team to the NBA Finals? Can he bring in a star so that the starting five can rival that of the Heat, Celtics, Spurs, and Lakers, while having the deepest bench in the league? Nelson and Cuban have made great things happen in the past and all Mavs fans hope they can do it again.

I'm glad you have! You haven't participated in my other ones. If you want to, you're more than welcome to join my Domination contest anytime. And I'll make this one good, but Domination is going to be my top priority, don't expect anything fantastic. :)

October 14, 2010.Caron Butler Out Until March

The Mavericks received a devastating blow when they discovered Butler could possibly be out for the 2010-2011 season with a knee injury. He is expected to finish recovery in late March 2011, and then he becomes a free agent in July. Probably the team's second-best scorer, Butler was Dallas's starting small forward. Now he is merely an expiring contract. Either Shawn Marion will have to step up his game to where it was five years ago, or Donnie Nelson will have to somehow bring in a player of a similar caliber if they want a championship in Dallas.

October 17, 2010.Mavericks Make Two Big Trades And A Signing

Sources have confirmed that the Philadelphia 76ers have parted ways with Andre Iguodala. Iguodala, Jason Kapono, and Tony Battie, will go to the Mavericks for Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler's $10M expiring contract, Dominique Jones, and Dallas's 2011 second-round pick. Iguodala will start at either the two or three for Dallas. Dallas immediately waived Battie and signed Larry Hughes to a one-year contract. In a separate trade, Brian Cardinal and Corey Brewer were traded to Oklahoma City for Nazr Mohammed and Eric Maynor.

Yes, yes, yes! Wow what a line up! Even your last three players, Larry Hughes, Deshawn Stevenson, and Jason kapono. Stevenson and Kapono can be nice additions, especially if one of your players go down to injuries.

Mavs: Oct/Nov Recap [12-3]

Postby rise on Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:07 am

Oct/Nov Recap

The entrance of Andre' Iguodala has more than made up for the loss of Caron Butler. Iguodala has averaged 21/7/7 through the first fifteen games of the regular season. He completes a crazy front-court trio including Chandler, Nowitzki, and now Iguodala. Iguodala has played a point forward role quite a bit, due to injuries to Jason Kidd and JJ Barea, and has performed tremendously. His versatility is unmatched on the team and his impact has been felt throughout the league, propelling the Mavericks to a 12-3 start, with hard losses to the Magic and Celtics, and a disappointment in Detroit.

Dirk Nowitzki is clearly an early candidate for MVP. He is finally averaging a double-double with 22.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest and also has 1.5 steals to go with them. He's shot a ridiculous 47% from behind the arc and 50% from the field, even though he missed the first five games with a sprained ankle. In his absence, Tyson Chandler and Nazr Mohammed played together for the first time since they played in Charlotte. They were quite formidable, blocking shots and rebounding at career-high rates. Third stringer Ian Mahinmi played like a starter at times and had 2 blocks per game. Shawn Marion played a the perfect sixth man role, filling in exactly where it was needed and averaged 14 points and 6 boards a game. The team looks so perfect, but Jason Kidd seems to be declining steadily. He took a noticeable dip after returning from a back strain that cost him three games in early November. He's declining fast and sadly, he may need to be replaced in the near future. After all, he is 37 and you can't expect him to last forever.

Speaking of lasting forever, the Mavericks' best win came in a triple-overtime affair against the San Antonio Spurs. With Dirk Nowitzki out, the 6'6 Iggy played as a power forward, letting Peja Stojakovic start at the 3. The two would heap 69 points between them, including Iguodala's game-saving three in regulation and his game-winning put-back dunk in OT3. Tyson Chandler pulled down 16 boards, while Shawn Marion and Nazr Mohammed also netted double-doubles. The Dallas Mavericks won 123-122 despite Manu Ginobili's 33 and Tony Parker's 27.

Yep, 4. As for Maynor, I would give him more playing time, but Terry and Barea play so well, even when J-Kidd's out.

Dec. Recap

Alright, let's get this straight. Dirk Nowitzki is uber-clutch this season. In December's sixteen games, Dirk piled up four game winners, along with a 27-point fourth quarter performance against the Utah Jazz. Tyson Chandler has been an absolute beast on the boards and few can stop him. Over the first two months of the season, Chandler has 12.1 rebounds per game, good for third in the NBA behind only Dwight Howard (14.4) and Pau Gasol (13.0) and he beats elite rebounders Kevin Love (11.9) and Zach Randolph (11.5). Andre Iguodala isn't quite as hot as he was in November, but still kept his season averages around 20/6/6. Jason Kidd seemed to look more like himself this month and started all sixteen games. The bench has played spectacularly, as usual, while Shawn Marion and Jason Terry continue to average close to 30 points per game from the bench. The Mavs went 13-3 in the month of December and are on top of the Western Conference. The second-seeded Portland Blazers are a full four games behind.

Around the League:
-The Miami Heat are 27-4 and lead the league. LeBron James is averaging 27.7 ppg (3rd in NBA), 9.0 rpg (19th in NBA), and 8.1 apg (14th in NBA), while Dwyane Wade leads the league in scoring with 30.2 points per game.
-The Minnesota Timberwolves hold the NBA's worst record with a 5-29 record. Kevin Love leads the team in points (17.2 - 33rd in NBA) and rebounds (12.6 - 4th in NBA). He has 29 double-doubles in 34 games.
-The current MVP frontrunner is Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, who is averaging 29.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 8.1 apg, 2.2 spg, and 0.7 bpg in 38.8 mpg.
-The current Rookie Of The Year frontrunner is LA Clippers' Blake Griffin, who is averaging 21.1 ppg, 13.0 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.0 spg, and 0.6 bpg in 36.1 mpg.
-The current Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner is Miami's LeBron James, who is averaging 27.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 8.1 apg, 2.1 spg, and 1.7 bpg in 39.0 mpg.
-The current Most Improved Player of the Year frontrunner is Detroit's Will Bynum, who is averaging 19.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.9 spg, and 0.2 bpg in 34.4 mpg.

-The Oklahoma City Thunder signed Allen Iverson for the season.
-The Houston Rockets signed Adam Morrison for the season.
-The Atlanta Hawks signed Josh Boone for the season and released Etan Thomas.

-The Milwaukee Bucks traded Drew Gooden and a 2013 first round pick to the San Antonio Spurs for Gary Neal.

Re: Mavs: Race to a Title- Dec [40-8]

Postby rise on Fri Apr 01, 2011 11:35 am

Jan. Recap

This squad is out of control! Tyson Chandler averaged over 15 rebounds per contest in January, while Dirk averaged over 30 points per game! Everything seems to be clicking perfectly in the Mavericks' 15-2 month of January. They are now 40-8.

One drawback to January that will hurt them is losing Peja Stojakovic for the season. Peja broke his left knee and tore ligaments in his ankle while fighting for a rebound against Houston. Luis Scola fell backwards onto Peja, bending Peja's knee laterally and he subsequently hurt his ankle while falling. Peja will miss about six months after knee and ankle surgeries and is considering retirement.

Otherwise the Mavs seem flawless. They only lost two games the whole moth, a triple-overtime thriller to the Orlando Magic and a 120-111 loss to Indiana in which Roy Hibbert, Danny Granger, and Darren Collison combined for 97 points. Dallas's wins were, for the most part, big and bold. In a 30-point thrashing of the Lakers, Kobe Bryant was kept to just ten points and six rebounds and Pau Gasol was unable to grab a single rebound in the whole game. Two nights later, they flattened the Milwakuee Bucks by 56 in a 141-85 blowout, where Dirk Nowitzki racked up a 51-point game. The Mavs just seem to get better and better.

Around the League:
-The Dallas Mavericks now lead the league with a 40-8 record. Miami trails Dallas with a 36-9 record.
-The Minnesota Timberwolves stll hold the NBA's worst record and now own a 9-39 record. Kevin Love leads the team in points (15.9 - 38th in NBA) and rebounds (12.3 - 5th in NBA). He has 37 double-doubles in 45 games.
-The current MVP frontrunner is Miami's LeBron James who has averages of 30.5 ppg (3rd in NBA), 8.7 apg (7th in NBA), and 7.9 rebounds (2nd among small forwards).
-The current Rookie Of The Year frontrunner is LA Clippers' Blake Griffin, who is averaging 23.0 ppg (12th in NBA), 12.5 rpg (4th in NBA), 3.9 apg, 1.4 spg, and 0.8 bpg.
-The current Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner is Portland's Lamarcus Aldridge, who is averaging 19.8 ppg (17th in NBA), 11.3 rpg (7th in NBA), 3.0 apg, 2.1 spg (4th in NBA), and 2.7 bpg (1st in NBA).
-The current Most Improved Player of the Year frontrunner is Portland's Lamarcus Aldridge.

Transactions:
-The Charlotte Bobcats sign Dar Tucker from the D-League and waive Joel Przybilla.
-The Philadelphia 76ers sign Chris Johnson and waive Tony Battie.
-The Oklahoma City Thunder trade Daequan Cook and Orlando's 2011-2015 second-round picks to New Orleans for DJ Mbenga, Emeka Okafor and New Orleans' 2014 first-round pick.
-The Milwaukee Bucks trade Brandon Jennings, Ersan Ilysova, a 2011 second round pick, a 2012 first round pick, and 2014 first round pick to the Portland Trail Blazers for Wesley Matthews, Patty Mills, and Greg Oden.
-The Utah Jazz trade Raja Bell and a 2012 first round pick to the Suns for Vince Carter and cash.

Injuries:
-The Cleveland Cavaliers lost Antawn Jamison for one month with a dislocated shoulder.
-The Phoenix Suns lost Zabian Dowdell for the season with a ruptured Achilles.
-The Utah Jazz lost Devin Harris until April with a severely sprained right knee.
-The Bobcats lost Stephen Jackson until March with a broken wrist.
-The Dallas Mavericks lost Peja Stojakovic for the season with a broken knee and torn ligaments in his ankle.
-The New York Knicks lost Carmelo Anthony until March with a broken elbow.
-The San Antonio Spurs lost DeJuan Blair until March with a sprained right knee.

Notes:
-The Mavericks never lost any member of their starting lineup at any time through the month of January.

Sorry guys, Thierrying/Houndying/Clevelandwinsing this one. (sorry guys :cheeky: )

I simulated the season. Dirk Nowitzki got happy when he led the Mavs to a 66-16 record, swept the 8th seed Grizz, then swept the 4th seed Thunder, then beat the 3rd seed Spurs, who managed to beat the sixth-seed Lakers in the first round. Anyway, the Mavs beat the Bulls 4-1 in the finals, but Andre Iguodala took home Finals MVP over Dirk.

Simulated the offseason. Tyson Chandler left for Utah! I was able to snag Marc Gasol and a rookie star in the offseason, but Dirk, JT, Marion, and Kidd all declined a lot over the offseason and the Mavs missed the playoffs. Sucks.
