http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6109031I know the Jazz aren't doing great but sad to see him go either way. Especially mid-season
This deserves its own thread and shouldn't just be in the general gameday comments folks. a HoF coach is resigning from a team that is supposedly going to make playoffs.
Wtf is going on?
Fri Feb 11, 2011 5:53 am
Agreed, it would be horrible to see Sloan go away mid-season. But why sign the extension, that's what's confusing me.
Fri Feb 11, 2011 5:53 am
It is sad to see him go, it's too bad he was coaching his best teams during the Jordan years. I'm not sure how this is going affect the Jazz the rest of the season though. Sloan's known as a demanding coach, so maybe a less-demanding interim coach could give this team the relaxed spirit they need to turn it on and make a playoff run.

Leaving without a CotY award, incredible...
Amazing coach for so many years, the next guy has a big shoe to fill.

Shocked to say the least, most of all in the middle of the season.
He had a great career, despite not winning a title, definite Hall of Famer.

Just read some stuff off of Marc Stein's twitter. Here are some quotes:
STEIN_LINE_HQ wrote:Sources say Sloan had lost team. One described situation as Deron Williams only staying if Sloan stepped down
STEIN_LINE_HQ wrote:Two sources say Wednesday's tension started when DWill ran different play than play called on sideline by Sloan, leading to halftime blowup
STEIN_LINE_HQ wrote:Yet one source stressed incident was just one of many flareups in recent weeks symptomatic of declining relationship between coach and star

Damn you Deron! Damn you! *shakes fist*

Don't understand why he'd retire mid-season and instead wait 'til after the regular season/playoffs. Sucks to see him go though.

i am shocked. i never thought he would get fired. never thought he woul quit. just figured he'd die on the job

Props to Deron for not taking Sloan's bullshit(if that rumor is true). I hate control freaks. No wonder he never won a championship. He wasn't good enough to teach player's how to run teams, never trusted them, so he called all the plays. They never got a chance to play. I bet they fastbreak at every opportunity just so they don't have to look at the sideline. Hall of fame coach.

Watch the Bobcats snatch him up and then make the playoffs as a 6th seed.
update.
live press conference getting ready to start.
can someone tell me who the players are in the picture on the side wall?

This also shows how tough Stockton and Malone are. No wonder they only missed a few games in their career.

That's a real shame, he deserved to go out on his own terms and at least finish the season but clearly that wasn't feasible with everything that apparently was going on behind the scenes. There are two sides to every story but still, I say he deserved better.
Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:06 am
Sloan himself said that no individual or organization pushed him out. He also said nothing happened last night that would have been considered the final straw. That was probably the most amicable press conference I have ever seen! they even brought out the tissues.
Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:46 am
Maybe that is the case, or perhaps Sloan just wanted to go out with some dignity and class and not throw anyone under the bus. It's strange that he abruptly resigned when he recently agreed to a one year extension, it just seems that there's more to the story.
Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:07 pm
This whole thing is weird. It caught me completely off guard when I found out that Sloan has stepped down. I wasn't expecting this at all, and I've always thought that he'd be with the franchise for so much more to come especially since he just agreed to a one year extension last week. From my point of view, I think Deron definitely has something to do with this. I also think that all those rumors aren't just "rumors".

Best coach to never win COTY. He would have deserved it several times because his teams were often not the best considering their roster. Sad to see him go.

this. A shame he is leaving though.

Karl Malone wants to bash some skulls!Sloan and longtime assistant Phil Johnson both said they decided to step down after Wednesday’s emotional loss to Chicago. Their resignations were announced at a press conference Thursday that was not attended by a single player.
That alone irritated Malone, who was drafted in 1985—the year after Sloan first joined the Jazz as an assistant.
“I don’t even need to answer whether I would have been there or not,” said Malone, who followed Sloan and All-Star guard John Stockton into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
“If I got something to say or do to a man, I’m going to look that man in the eye and tell him what is going to happen. That’s just me now.”
Mon Feb 14, 2011 10:38 am
“They changed the floor back to old school. They changed the uniform back to old school. Somebody tell the damn players to start playing like old school,” Malone said before the Jazz hosted the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. “It may work. They spent a lot of money on the rest, now how about you tell the players. I’m just calling it like I see it.”
I'm not a huge fan of Karl Malone, but I do like that quote.

I like that quote too. What he said made a lot of sense.
