Losing hair. WTF should I do?

Postby NovU on Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:28 am

I guess it was only a matter of time since it's in my genes to go bald, but still it's extremely concerning. Not at the serious stage yet but slowly I can see my forehead going M shape. Especially with school and all, I do believe stress is the major cause, but it's not something I can do anything about anyways, at least for now. I also did some research on hair transplant but hated whole idea of it. The whole procedure sounds painful and success isn't guaranteed. And permanent scar? Not worth it, just not yet. The technology just isn't there yet.

Some tips on preventing hair loss...

- quit smoking/drinking
- exercise regularly
- don't skip meal
- choose shampoo wisely (ie. nizoral, nisim, nioxin)
- healthy diet(ie. black beans, protein foods)
- massage your scalp

Share your thoughts and ideas. I have to assume some of us here age 25 or above have the similar issue as I do. Let's prevent this before it gets seriously outta control.

Shave your head - just accept your going bald and get rid of it all.

also, don't use any shampoo. how many balding homeless people do you see? they have such lucious, flowing hair and don't use anything in it!

Not much that I know of since my hair is long and thick. But I think shampoo has something to do with it. A high school classmate had the same problem and his balding spot was too obvious being placed on the top of his head. He just shaved his hair completely bald.

Damn I hope don't start losing hair at that age. I love my hair. As a matter of fact I've been growing it out since I've been in college. But seriously don't be self-concious about that. I've seen guys with bald spots pull some of the best women.

25? That's a bit early. If you are really that concerned, go see a doctor or a hair specialist. Rogaine works for a lot of people. Do not fuck with propecia.

Personally, mine has gradually receded with a balding spot and thinner on top. The worst part about it is if I let the back grow too long, it looks like a damn mullet, so I have to keep the back shorter than I want to. The front just isn't thick enough to grow long any more without looking really thin and stringy. The weather was very cold and rainy throughout the end of last year, and I had noticed some new hairs come in at the front, which was interesting. Although, that could have been a coincidence between the hair growth phases, and it may have just been growing back after falling out.

As for bald men getting women, it's all about confidence.

Used to be clean shaven for many years and I looked too much like a thug. :o
I am going to try no shampoo at all. Hoping dandruff won't bother me too much.

Recently, I had a haircut, long to short. And I noticed my hairline moved back quite a bit. I haven't had this short hair for years but now that I do, it's getting my attention. Perhaps, I will look into medicines/drugs too.

Wait. You are saying cold weather could grow you hair? That makes sense theoretically, but I am not sure about hair on your forehead. I think it's got more to do with your genes. I live in Canada where is known for cold and brutal weather, yet I see lots of bald guys. I am on my pace to join the group in couple years and want to prevent that. :shake:

I've been gradually losing my hair for last 10 years. Gradually getting worse. Helps I'm fairly tall. It looks better when your hair is short. I found and married a woman before it got too bad

Such is life I guess. If you can afford $90/month, then you can get Rogaine.

That's the worst solution though. Wearing hat makes baldness go faster and worse.

As for me, wearing a hat is so uncomfy. Sometimes I do wear it but that's only whenever I feel lazy doing my hair, otherwise, I normally don't wear hats.

There is nothing to prove or disprove that, but I have known some people who have no leg hair on a certain part because they sleep on that side all the time or wear shorts all the time.

When it's time, I will perhaps come to accept... but why so when you can still prevent it or prolong?

I think I used Rogaine for 4 to 5 months. Ordinary stuff is mediocre, extra strength is alright. It didn't regrow hair though, but it did stop it getting worse. That was quite a few years back. I didn't really have any strong desire to use it but my wife nagged me so I thought yep, if you pay for it, alright. Eventually because of cost, she stopped buying it. No big deal to me. If I was single or had wads of spare cash then I might consider paying for hair thing or Rogaine.

I'm just going to let it run its course & just keep my hair short (letting it grow out makes it look worse & like you're trying to comb over or cover it). FYI, I'm around your age, been losing my hair since about 19 (receeding hair line goes back a little each year & bald spot, which started about 6 or 7 years back is slowly getting worse, will probably gradually continue like this for as long as I live I guess).

I do have a friend, also around my age (29), who only started losing hair about 4 or 5 years back but at a lot quicker rate than mine. Although my wife has noticed that he's suddenly getting hair back. I am assuming he's gotta be on Rogaine or something. For some people they actually get hair regrowth as well as stopping current hair falling out.

I think your best course of action is either spend the money (hair studio hair transplants/laser treatment etc or Rogaine) or just accept the inevitable & either shave your head or keep it short. Why do you think guys like Michael Jordan shaved their heads? It wasn't style, it was to beat the inevitable. Just look at his father's (before he died) hair loss.

Anyways, I'll throw a random stat out there. Approximately 50% of men are bald/balding by the time they reach 40, so you are not alone.

I'll throw out another X opinion. Bald men have better pulling power than men with beards (Y) Unless they've got a comb over (exception Donald Trump).

That doesn't look that bad. The worst part of mine is the fringe where there his hair, but not much of it. I have medium-long hair, just above the shoulders. I can't really style it at all, but messing around in the mirror, I combed it forward and it didn't look too bad. I think I will cut if short when it gets warmer and then do that.

Yeah, it's not too bad, as I said before, I'm losing it slowly. I have very fine hair so bald spot seems more noticeable. Although each time I get a hair cut recede is slightly worse as is bald spot, which I didn't really have any pics of (not surprising  )

EDIT: My last pic obviously has hair forward to cover some of receeding parts

I've been told I look good in a beanie or a hat, and I am sure that is because of my receding hairline.

The X, you still got it, man. Like Pdub said, it doesn't look too bad at all.

That sounds promising. But $90 / month, I am going to have to think about this as I am a student right now.

I hear healthy routine(which isn't actually hard to follow) for hair can grow hair back or prevent hair loss. I am going to try that for now. I will post the result.
