FDA cracks down on alcoholic energy drinks

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent warning letters to four beverage companies today, which manufacture popular alcoholic energy drinks, finding that the products combining alcohol and caffeine were not safe. "There is evidence that the combinations of caffeine and alcohol in these products pose a public health concern," the agency said.

The popularity of these drinks has skyrocketed among young people and college-age people here in the US. Has anybody ever tried drinks like these? I personally did not have a good experience. and for your viewing pleasure:

What's the point since you can mix energy drinks and alcohol, anyways? What's the potential health risk?

Since when has the FDA cared about health risks?

The real problem here is not a single one of these companies are one of the big beer or liquor manufacturers.

Redbull cocktails are common, aren't they? I regularly had it a few years ago. Now days I prefer to stay sober.

It actually makes me wonder, can you buy Irish Coffees and Rum and Cokes that are pre-canned? Isn't it the same idea? (Except for the fact that youths and minorities prefer this stuff over what I mentioned.)

What they should can is V8 Fusion and like, vodka, or something. Serving of fruit and vegetables plus some healthy alcohol. Hell, regular V8. Basically a bloody mary.

To be fair though, if you take 96 times the accepted dose of caffeine in one shot you will die if the government runs the health care system.

i've never seen a pre-canned rum & coke, but isn't there a difference in caffeine levels between a Coke and say a Monster or Rockstar energy drink? just curious, since i have no idea. my impression on has been that the caffeine from drinks like four lokos are closer to monster than coke

Re: FDA cracks down on alcoholic energy drinks

Well, yeah, there's a difference, since energy drinks are just caffeine shots mixed with flavored water. But I still don't see why Rum and Coke hasn't been canned. Maybe you can't do it and keep the carbonation yet.

I guess you'd need Coca-Cola's help, but you could always sell a Rum and Soda knock-off. Or not, I don't know.

The sheer fact we still have dry counties or towns and state run liquor stores in this country is absurd enough for me. I mean we were founded on avoiding taxes on our drinks, our first great challenge to our new Republic was over whiskey, and we spent a glorious half-century where the only campaign expenditures were on big barrels of liquor to get people to come out, get wasted and vote. The Progressives really ruined this nation. Not to mention women voting, the income tax and the direct election of Senators!

The feds saying they'd punish people for having marijuana even had prop 19 passed is proof enough there's nothing rational going on with prohibitionists.

At least the gross of Michigan still lets me buy gallons upon gallons of liquor without having to leave the county or city. Maybe the only thing going for this state, even if there's no Liquor Barns.

But it has, for at least the last 10-15 years. My brother loves his Bacardi Rum and Cola cans.

EDIT: Or are you meaning actual Coca Cola instead of just the generic caramel cola that they use?

Never seen it in the U.S. either. It doesn't seem to be produced for here as Bacardi doesn't list it as a product in the U.S.

And 5%? Bah.

This just more asinine nanny legislation from big brother. Don't we pay enough in taxes for these clowns to GTFO of our daily lives?

In anticipation of this, I stocked up on Four Loko the other day.

No, you pay about a quarter of what you should be paying.

The fact you stocked up on this is just more evidence you don't know how to run your own life.

You'll thank us once we've remade you.

Shane Battier = Suffers from Dookieism. Common illness suffered by Coach K products with symptoms of overvaluation in the draft, never winning NBA titles, and all around poor NBA performance. Ala Cherokee Parks, Jay Williams, Christian Laettner, Danny Ferry, Corey Maggette, etc...

Yao Ming = Most expensive Chinese export to date but in reality turned out to be cheaply manufactured goods.

Wtf, cant you just buy an energy drink and put vodka in it?

Re: FDA cracks down on alcoholic energy drinks

Fri Nov 19, 2010 6:14 pm

Yes, but being able to skip that step (or rather pay someone else to do it for you) is a threat to public health!
