Wow. I'd honestly rather have Joe Johnson and his albatross than Gay and Conley's contracts (which equal about the same amount). Its a good thing that there are only like 10 Grizzlies fans, as this is a turrible move. Chris Wallace's idea of "continuity" is spending half the cap on the team's two worst starters. Can't wait until they let the frontcourt who got them to their "lofty" 40 win total last season go and give Mayo a max extension.

I would say right now this deal looks bad right now, but Conley is steadily settling in his role as well as increasing his output. I would even go as far as to say the Grizzlies paid Conley more for potential. Also, I am now on Conley's side, only because Kelly Dwyer is a gigantic a$$ for breaking the news about Conley and saying that Conley is overpaid simply by quoting Conley's career stat. It is only natural that a player that was drafted early would start with lower career stats.

How is that being a "gigantic ass"? Mike Conley has barely developed over his three years, being basically the same player he was when drafted. The players on either side of him have made improvements. Jeff Green was a disaster as a rookie, and is now respectable if over-utilized. Horford has gone from passable to a legitimate All-Star level player. A couple picks earlier was Durant who has gone from a high volume above-average player to one of the five best players in the league. Further down in that draft we have guys like Noah, Brooks and Afflalo, not to mention the second round players like Landry, Big Baby, and teammate Marc Gasol who are guys who either have, will be or would be key rotation players on extended playoff teams.

It's like the Felton stuff, the guy has had years during which he should be improving by leaps and bounds as he ages into the NBA game, he was coming into the season not any clearly different from how he was as a rookie. At some point you don't throw gobs of money at people who you can replace from the draft or D-League at any time.

Conley is a joke. he can't ride off of Oden's coattails anymore but somehow he is where he is right now. I would honestly take Lowry over Conley any day.

I'm not selling anyone on the premise that this deal is an excellent deal. I am pointing out however that the article did not state al the facts correctly. I will concede that conley deserves around 5-6 mil for his production the first 3 years. And that for a top 5 lottery pick, he is underperforming.

On the other hand, Like all NBA contract, they are paid out on a scale. And on some contracts, they a part of it is paid through performances bonuses. According to hoopshype, next year he will be paid 6.5 mil, but no one knows how much of this will be paid through performance bonuses. Let us say its 1mil to 500k for performance bonuses, and he receives it only by outperforming last year's outputs, and he missed the mark. He will then be paid less. So at least for next year, I am more or less certain that he will be paid right around the area where I figured he should be paid for his performance for the first 3 yrs of his career. Second, even at 12 pts approx 5 ast 2 rb 1.5 stls .43 fg% .32 3p% (please correct me if I misquoted), I can hardly call him a draft bust, maybe a little late, ,maybe unworthy of a top 5 pick, but certainly not a draft bust. He gets up on money up to 8-9 mil only on his 4th or 5th year. Even on his 5th year, even Kelly Dwyer does not know how much of it is guaranted money. Maybe if he is still performing like he is now, he gets waived.

At this point, I would go back and say Kelly Dwyer is a gigantic ass, because first, he writes an article that only has hate for Mike Conley. Second, his piece again does not state clearly all the facts, especially when it comes to the technicalities of Mike Conley's conract. We don't even know if there is an opt out clause for the team. Because like all nba contract reports, details of player contracts are not disclosed to the media. I could compare his contract to players like Nelson, Andre Miller, Jose Calderon, Tony Parker etc. But the money for me is not that far off from what the others are getting. That is why in my mind, Kelly Dwyer has been unfair to Mike Conley, becuase he wrote an article stating that Mike Conley is going to be overpaid without knowing the exact figures. Calling Mike Conley a disappointment, seriously, I never imagined him to be playing anything like Chris Paul, Deron Williams or even Steve Nash. I never imagined him to be a top 5 point guard. Maybe a terrel brandon at best. Mike Conley defnitely got a generous deal, but to my mind, it is anywhere near as Kelly Dwyer places it as "bafflng". There probably isn't a worst deal this year only because most teams are still too afraid to make a move before the CBA is resolved.

Conley is a great backup, sparkplug PG. Put him on a contender as maybe the 2nd or 3rd guy off the bench (a better version of Howard Eisley) & he's at his best. Make it happen
