Jefferson re-signs with the Spurs

Thu Jul 22, 2010 10:08 am

Story @ Yahoo! NBA

Richard Jefferson was a way overpriced $14 million swingman in San Antonio last season.

His new deal will likely give the Spurs more for their money.

The Spurs re-signed Jefferson to a multiyear deal Wednesday, nearly a month after the nine-year veteran opted out of a guaranteed $15.2 million next season. Terms of his new deal weren’t disclosed, but Jefferson had been willing to give up the final year of his bloated deal for longer-term security.

“To him, being able to secure his future under the current set of rules that we’re living under, eliminates some uncertainty,” Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said.

Jefferson did not meet with reporters. His agent, Todd Eley, did not immediately return messages Wednesday.

Although his new salary wasn’t immediately known, the Spurs will be paying less for the 30-year-old Jefferson, who was San Antonio’s fifth-leading scorer last season while earning a salary second only to Tim Duncan.

I wouldn't have expected that, guess no one else was interested (or willing to pay him what he wanted) and the Spurs want to give it another shot. I'd expect the paycut he's taking to be pretty substantial otherwise the Spurs may not have dodged a bullet after all.

I read that despite Jefferson's play last season, Pop wanted him to stay with the team and personally convinced him to opt out of his player option just so he could be with the team and also give the Spurs some salary relief (from that bloated contract of his).

I heard $38m over 4 years.
Must have been organised prior to him getting out of his contract. I still like Jefferson, with some more time in the system I'd like to see how he goes.

Almost 10mils a season. I wonder if he's in Pop's long term plan or will be moved.

I hated his game in this yea's playoffs. He seemed to be lost everywhere on the court. Reluctant to take open jumpers, not knowing how to finish around the rim, and his legs definitely looked a step slower from his days with Kidd and Carter.

What a waste of money. They'd still be contenders had they gotten Maggette instead of him.

I'd rather take Jefferson over Maggette. Actually I did not want to have any of those both on my roster, let alone for their current salaries.

For whatever reason, he just didn't fit in.
