Shocking news, Lebron wins MVP

Sat May 01, 2010 10:47 am

source
Cleveland's superstar was voted the league's MVP for the second straight year, a person familiar with the announcement told The Associated Press on Friday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced the results of the vote.

James is the 10th NBA player to be the MVP in consecutive seasons. The 25-year-old star joins Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan and Steve Nash. Russell, Chamberlain and Bird won it three times in a row.

James' win was expected after he had the finest season of his seven-year pro career. What remains to be seen is his margin of victory. Last season, James received 109 of 121 first-place votes, winning in a landslide in voting by a nationwide media panel of sports writers and broadcasters over Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, who won the award in 2008.

I guess my vote for MVP doesn't count...

Considering that the fan voting only counted for one actual vote, it was highly unlikely a single fan's vote or the fan vote itself was going to decide the winner. I'm expecting the final tally to be similar to last year and rightfully so.

Lebron will probably be named MVP every year, until he retires.

I wouldn't be too surprised if he made it three in a row next year, but the media tends to get bored picking the same winners year after year regardless of whether they deserve it or not, so I'd say they'll look elsewhere and find another player who still has a strong claim to the honour in their own right.

Hopefully thats not going to be the case. That would be boring. Im sure Dwight, Durant, Wade and Chris Paul (if he gets back to being healthy and the Hornets start playing like they were in 08) will get it eventually.

I'd say so. As I said, the media gets bored picking the same player over and over again when it comes to the MVP, even if that player has a strong claim to win it year after year.

The media is hyped around Bron though,he's more "marketed" than MJ in his days.

Not really, it's divided between Kobe and LeBron more evenly than it ever was with MJ and any other star of the day. They selected someone other than MJ in years where he arguably should've been named MVP, they'll pick against LeBron too.

What an ultra mega shocker. Just when you thought people finally came to senses to vote for Wade. Well well well...

I hope Durant wins it next year.

What if he's not the most deserving player next year though?

You'd have to think that LeBron, while really really great, won't have EVERY MVP. Like Andrew said, voters just get burned out some times. Whether that's right or wrong is another discussion, but sometimes there's a guy who's resume is only lacking an MVP and the voter's go that way on that basis.

The year Kobe won the MVP probably should have been the year Chris Paul won it. His team was only a game behind the Lakers record-wise and his stats were probably better than Kobe's as-well. Had CP3 had that season the following year when LeBron finally had his year I don't know that he would have won it either because it was a repeat of the "Man this guy (LeBron) really deserves an MVP" stigma.

I can see Durant winning it if he keeps up his production from this year and leads the Thunder to a top three finish in the West. Then again, that would be eerily similar to what CP3 did... so it's really a toss-up sometimes.

It was indeed a landslide.

James received 116 of a possible 123 first-place votes to win in a landslide over Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant, who was picked first on four ballots. Orlando center Dwight Howard received the other three first-place votes and finished fourth.

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant had no first-place votes and finished third.

Voting was done by a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters, and this year one ballot was cast by fans in an online vote, which went to James. Players were awarded 10 points for first, seven points for second, five for third, three for fourth and one for fifth.

James finished second on five ballots and two writers placed him third. A year ago, James received 109 of 122 first-place votes.

James finished with 1,205 points, nearly doubling Durant (609). His margin of victory is the second largest in history, topped by only O’Neal, who won by 799 points in 2000. His first-place total was also the most since Kevin Garnett got 120 of 123 in 2004.

Surprising that Kobe didn't garner at least one first place vote.

Gravedigging for fun: viewtopic.php?p=22220#p22220 (and on)

Major LeBron skepticism from seven years ago. Highlights include:

When Lamar Odom came out of High School, he was far more polished and better than LeBron James will be coming out of High School.

Probably... Who else is better [than LeBron, on high school, college or foreign ball?

There's at least four or five people...at least...Anthony, Milicic, Bosh come to mind right now...

every once in a while Tim Barnes comes to play, and he's better than LeBron James...

Ah, that takes me back. As I recall, jasonduncan (or whatever name he was going by at the time) had the closest prediction for his rookie season performance.

Who knew Heidi was on to something? Well it's not like we hated Lebron, jasonduncanjames just made it so hard to like LBJ.

I still dont like him though. Best player and all...but don't like him.

He's too in love with the spotlight.
