Dell Curry loses ROY vote

Thu Apr 15, 2010 12:35 am

Just in case he was planning on voting for his son.

The NBA has taken away Charlotte Bobcats broadcaster Dell Curry’s rookie of the year vote because his son is among the leading candidates for the award.

Curry’s son, Stephen Curry, is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 assists per game for Golden State. He and Kings guard Tyreke Evans, who is averaging 20.3 points and 5.8 assists, are considered the front-runners to be top rookie.

“Oh, he’s voting for Tyreke,” Stephen Curry joked after his team’s 103-94 loss to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. “That’s good for me then. … Just to be in that conversation is great for me.”

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Dell Curry would be allowed to vote for all the other postseason awards, but the league did not want to put him in an awkward position with the rookie award.

Frank said the league would replace Curry with another voter who covers the Bobcats, but has not picked a replacement yet.

Fair enough I suppose, though even if the elder Curry isn't "put in an awkward position" - ie casts a biased vote - who's to say his replacement won't do him a favour or favour Stephen in the ROY voting anyway? The NBA sure picks its battles when it comes to protecting the integrity of the game.

Initially, I thought it was going to be a battle between Jennings and Evans, as they were getting all the spotlights early in the season, but it seems Dell Curry is closer to ROY than Jenning at the moment, though Evans will pretty much will win it. Anyways, it's only right for him to be not able to vote. Good.

they shouldn't take away his vote, it's not like it's a consensus anyways

I wouldn't be stunned if Jennings wins it actually. His marketability and team's winning record will be a big help

Perhaps, but the hype for Jennings seems to have died down a bit.

If espns votes are any indication? Tyrekes running away with it. 1 vote for Jennings out of all of them. A few currys, mostly tyreke's.
