No Wang Zhizhi... a younger him in Stealth's Mingyu Li. A very solid outfit... but beaten by the more athletic Nigerians. Looks like the 2nd overall pick is already one up on the 1st overall pick as well as 13th overall pick. :P

Yeah man, you and Biedrins nearly led the team out of the Group Stage. But again, the Nigerians kept swatting your shots!

2012 London Olympic Games – Men’s Basketball

New Zealand, Germany Engaged In Overtime Thriller

August 8, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Mark Moore’s short jumper and hustle play on the other end of the floor sent a dramatic quarterfinal against Germany into overtime. Andrew Watson looked like he had just won New Zealand the game with a wide open three point bucket with 1.7 seconds left on the clock but Dirk Nowitzki drained a high-arching trey at the buzzer to win it 103-102 for Germany.

Nowitzki made one of the greatest shots in what was the greatest basketball game of the Olympics so far. “That was a huge shot,” dejected New Zealand captain Moore said, “He made it with the whole world watching. That was a lot of pressure. I can’t believe how it ended.” In a game with 22 lead changes, the crowd was left on the edges of their seats. The capacity crowd was there to see Team USA in action but was in for a treat as the Kiwis and Germans did battle.

Nowitzki finished with 29 points, a tournament-high 15 rebounds, Chris Hova had 22 points, 8 assists, and Chris Kaman added 18 points. Watson led New Zealand in scoring with 34 points and Moore was also outstanding with 27 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds.

In the other quarterfinals, Australia beat Nigeria 88-72 behind Andrew Bogut’s 20 points, 9 rebounds and CSKA Moscow’s Patty Mills’ 16 points. LeBron James (22 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 blocks) and the United States continued to cruise with a 91-73 win over Italy. Spain decimated Brazil 102-77 with Pau Gasol having his best game of the tournament with 38 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks.

United States Make Great Escape

August 10, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Team USA were given their sternest test of their Olympics campaign and passed; but only just. After trailing for most of the game, the Americans knuckled down on the defensive end and grinded out a 78-73 win against Germany. Dwayne Wade stepped up with 33 points from off the bench and Kobe Bryant was the only other player in double figures as he added 24.

Dirk Nowitzki finished with the highest points total so far at the Olympics with 45 points. Virginia University stalwart Christian Oliver was impressive off the German bench with 14 points and Chris Hova added 5 points and 16 assists. “Dirk Nowitzki was amazing,” Bryant said after the game, “Germany definitely played out of their skins tonight. Kudos to them.”

The matchup became fiery for all the wrong reasons as Team USA teammates Kevin Durant and Moses Chara let their frustration get the better of themselves. In two separate timeouts, Durant and Chara were involved in shoving matches. The second resulted in both players being sent to the change rooms. Both players failed to make a basket each before they sat out the rest of the game. Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski defended his decision to bench two of his best scorers in a semifinal where his team struggled to put the ball in the hoop, “No one is bigger than the team. I won’t have teammates bickering. If I let it continue, it would only make the atmosphere a lot more negative. It was the right move.”

LeBron James was held by the Germans to just 4 points but he was lucky that Wade and Bryant carried the Americans. The two swingmen were huge down the stretch as they scored all of the team’s fourth quarter points. Bryant was instrumental as he knocked down back to back triples to hold Germany at bay. Nowitzki could not get off a shot in the final two minutes of the game and Germany couldn’t get over the final hurdle.

“It was a great game,” James praised the Germans, “We’re ready to get that gold medal now.”

In the other semifinal, Andrew Bogut’s 25 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists was not enough to lead Australia past Spain. Pau Gasol scored 21, Rickly Rubio added 11 assists, 7 steals, Rudy Fernandez had 18, and Marc Gasol chipped in 15 as the Spanish rolled into the gold medal match with a 86-67 win.

What are you guys talking about? It's a US-Spain final

Sucks that Tall Blacks got beaten by Dirk, but hey, that's what Dirk does. We must've played out of our skins to even have a chance to get a shot at moving onto semis. Historically we've struggled against the Germans.

Sucks we couldn't get past the first round, but all the bets were on a USA-Spain final. So, that's realistic (Y)

Dirk was huge for Germany. But Tall Blacks played great to force OT.

Team USA shut down the other players... Dirk is just the entire German team. :P

Germany Deny Bronze Medal From Boomers

August 12, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Australia were denied a medal but could not complain because the team that beat them were Germany – the team that missed out on a chance for Gold after dropping their semifinal by single digits. “I guess it sucks that we didn’t win the bronze,” Andrew Bogut stated, “But we came up against a better team. A superior team. And I know that Dirk (Nowitzki) is still very mad that they didn’t make the gold medal match.”

The Germans rolled the Aussies 80-65. Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 23 points. Chris Hova finished a strong tournament with 20 points and NBA prospect Florian Ruf added 17. Jeremy Mason, Bogut, and Patty Mills each had 12 points for Australia in an anti-climatic end to their Olympic campaign.

“We’ve had a great run and the draw and schedule were on our side. We just didn’t take advantage of the great situation that we had,” Bogut lamented.

United States Beat Spain For Gold

August 12, 2012

LONDON (AP) – In a rematch of the Beijing 2008 gold medal match, Spain were not even close as the United States scored a tournament high 129 points against the Spanish. Spain struggled to score as they were also beaten by the biggest margin of the Games; the final score 129-84.

Team USA was focused on proving that they were a close-knit group with Moses Chara and Kevin Durant seemingly having made amends for their scuffles on the bench during their semifinal win against Germany. The two players came off the bench to lead Team USA in scoring with 18 points apiece. They were also sent to do a post-game interview on behalf of the American team.

“This was like an All-Star Game,” Chara boasted, “Except Team USA was like the Western All-Stars and the other guys were some scrappy college kids. We were just all over them. We’re at the top of the World.” Durant joked, “This ain’t my team baby. This ain’t my team. This is our team. Our team won gold.”

LeBron James scored 17, Carmelo Anthony had 16, Jay Gray, Chris Bosh each scored 14, Gilbert Arenas had 12, and Dwight Howard recorded five dunks to get to 10 points.

Spain was no match for the mighty Americans despite all of the talk before the gold medal match. LeBron James’ Cleveland teammate Rudy Fernandez was the only player who came to play against Team USA as he scored a game high 36 points. “Rudy was their best player,” Team USA Coach Krzyzewzki acknowledged, “He scored just about half of their team’s points. We came into the game wanting to shut down the Gasol brothers and not giving Rubio too much space. It’s very comforting to come away from the game and know that we accomplished that.”

Too short man. But I will check it out. Raja Bell plays SG for them I think. But if you were SG, you'd be starting over him. I've put in your new ratings but you couldn't beat Jose for the starting spot... but you only got a season left before you can opt out. :P
