For Josh Howard.
Looks like this could make the Mavs the 3rd contender in the West after the Lakers and Nuggs if this works out.

Nice move for the Mavs, but I was hoping for the Celtics scenario Yahoo reported (Ray Allen, Scalabrine and Giddens, all expiring, for Jamison and Butler)
Sat Feb 13, 2010 11:16 am
Fair deal. Dallas gets the better player, and Washington gets the expiring. Its not official though. Thank god the Celtics aren't getting Caron and Jamison. I hate them.
Sat Feb 13, 2010 12:40 pm
Good trade for both teams I think. Josh is a good player but with Shawn Marion, he was definitely expendable.
I don't know how this will work out to be, but I think this trade will help Washington little more than the Mavericks. Mavericks already is doing good, and I don't see how this trade will elevate their level to LAL or CLE.

Mavericks have been playing .500 ball for the last few weeks, and their Pythag record insists they are a fringe playoff team. I'd like to see them get K-Mart moreso.
Sat Feb 13, 2010 4:49 pm
Holy crap.
Maybe I'm overreacting because anything feels better than Josh Howard, and the Mavs are probably going to come out of the break and lose three straight anyway, but I really like this deal. Especially if they pull the 30-day thing with Gooden.
Ross and Singleton weren't playing much anyway, and even though Stevenson's a headcase, he can at least shoot the three. And Haywood is definitely an upgrade over Damp.
Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:06 pm
Don't get too excited. It hasn't happened yet.

More of a slightly lateral move. But that'd probably be the best Center rotation in the league.
Too bad about the rest of the roster.

On the RealGM Bucks forum there's a couple of guys who have some sort of insider knowledge, they are generally right about most things. The latest frightening post...
New tidbit developing I just received via text. If Dallas acquires DeShawn Stevenson in the Caron trade he may be sent here for Warrick.
Sat Feb 13, 2010 9:50 pm
Warrick?
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT I MIGHT BE SHITTING MY PANTS.
HOLY SHIT.
And about Damp, maybe the early-season Damp would've matched Haywood's production evenly. But recently it feels like he's floundered and regressed a little. I don't have statistical proof, but if there is such, it'd be nice to see it.
Sat Feb 13, 2010 10:01 pm
Sorry. I didn't mean to downplay adding Haywood, which is incredible. He's a slightly less awesome Dampier (who yes was the best center in the league to start the season but has trailed off), but with very good defense. If he can play 30-ish minutes with Dampier picking up the rest that rotation is brutal, even the Lakers would have issues against it.
My point, which I failed to make before, is not that replacing Dampier with Haywood is really a great upgrade (as Haywood is worse on offense but much better defensively and can play longer imo), but having both of them is basically close to cheating.
The Dampier/Diop rotation was awesome, but this is even better since unlike Diop, Haywood has to be guarded occasionally on offense.
The Warrick deal would make it clear what the Mavericks are trying to do. They're basically trying to setup a situation where they can play the same style with their backups but also go small/big to maximize the people on the court. This is really an underrated thing, as a lot of people looking at the "best five" and ignore depth.
Cuban does know this shit, read his blog and it is clear. Despite his emotional display, he does have a rational understanding of things.
They're one of the more amusing teams in their ability to make these moves with "key players" and keep the team going, somewhat the counter of the Spurs "change the role players" method.
Sat Feb 13, 2010 11:47 pm
I'm hoping the Warrick thing doesn't work out, apparently they're also talking to Indiana about Troy Murphy (supposedly Indiana really wants Ersan Ilyasova included and the Bucks don't want to part with him) and Udonis Haslem. I don't know about the Haslem deal but I'd imagine any deal involving Murphy would have Warrick as part of it.

really, thank god for this so the Celtics can't do that trade with Ray Allen, I really, really, don't want to see him go
Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:20 am
Official:
http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nba/ne ... id=4912262The teams agreed on the principal pieces Friday: Butler, Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson to Dallas for Josh Howard and Drew Gooden. Mavericks reserves Quinton Ross and James Singleton were added to the deal Saturday and are also Washington-bound, with Dallas due to receive cash considerations in addition to the three players.
Sun Feb 14, 2010 1:28 pm
Nice trade for Mavs, if for nothing else in getting rid of Howard & replacing him with a better swingman in Butler
Sun Feb 14, 2010 1:30 pm
a great move for the Mavs. Im expecting a much stronger Mavs this playoffs.
Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:02 pm
Good trade for the Mavericks and an acceptable "rebuilding mode" move for the Wizards. Too bad for the Rockets, clearly that proposed three team trade that included the Knicks fell through.
Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:37 pm
McGrady to NYK unlikely to happen.
next: Amar'e to Cavs...
but gosh Amar'e wants to play with the Heat.
Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:54 pm
The move likely propels the Mavs from first round fodder to second round fodder, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Looks like they won't be Blazers' one chance at making the conf. semis though...
Sun Feb 14, 2010 6:17 pm
C JaVale McGee
PF Antawn Jamison
SF Josh Howard
SG Mike Miller
PG Randy Foye
Poor Flip that line-up is totally void of defense. Jamison needs to get traded just as a respect thing, he's too good a player/leader to waste the last good years of his career with that garbage.
Mark Cuban on the other hand must have been working his blackberry hard core during that Celebrity Game to get all this locked away. I've never been totally sold on Butler playing SG, but maybe he can gel in Dallas. As he said himself,"Every time I was dealt, I had better years with my new team than I had with the old one."
If Dallas gets 07-08 Butler they become very scary IMO.
Sun Feb 14, 2010 10:43 pm
They should start Boykins in order to raise ticket sales.
Mon Feb 15, 2010 5:41 am
I agree. They should play Nellieball and start Jamison at the 5, Howard at the 4, etc.

Yeah, Celtics without Ray Ray wouldn't be cool.
Mon Feb 15, 2010 7:11 am
The Mavs are definitely contenders now. The Wizards better hope that Josh doesn't bring guns to the locker-room.
