BoxscoreRecapThe Mavericks shot 81% in the first half and scored 49 in the second quarter. By all accounts, the final score was a lot closer than it had any right to be. Here's something that caught my eye too:
Vandeweghe, the Nets’ general manager, replaced the fired Lawrence Frank and will coach the team the rest of the season—but not quite yet. Though his hiring was announced Tuesday, Vandeweghe won’t coach his first game until Friday, leaving assistant Tom Barrise in charge one more time.
In a strange arrangement, Vandeweghe handled the pregame coach’s meeting with reporters, then sat in a seat above center court with Del Harris, the former Dallas assistant who will join him on the bench.
“Nobody likes to lose. Period. And obviously we made it clear and you all know this is a developmental year, but nobody expected to be 0-17,” Vandeweghe said. “That’s just obviously not acceptable and I think that it’s not acceptable to anybody and especially the players.”
Clearly Vandeweghe doesn't want to be a part of the long winning streak, especially the record setting 18th consecutive loss, but that sends a pretty poor message when he's letting Barrise take the fall so he can step in after the dubious record has been attained and distance himself from it. Who knows how long the losing streak is going to continue, if Vandeweghe wants to avoid taking control on the sidelines until the streak is broken he could be waiting until mid December; surely he wouldn't push back his debut further than Friday. That would be a complete and utter farce.
I don't have anything against the Nets, but I have to admit I kind of want to see how far they can get into the NBA season without winning a game. Just as it's rare to see a team get on a hot streak and win 15+ games in a row, it's not that often teams have such an awful run of futility, at least to this extent. There's a twisted part of me that's interested to see just how bad it can get for the Nets, because this is turning into a spectacle to behold.
I also think we can end speculation about LeBron going to the Nets. I don't think the cap room, young roster, the move to Brooklyn or Jay-Z's ownership really matters at this point. They could sell the team and divide ownership amongst all of LeBron's closest friends and family, move the team to Akron and get the first overall pick in 2010 and I still doubt LeBron would be sold on playing for them anytime soon.

Poor Nets, poor, poor Nets.

Can't say I wasn't really expecting this to happen after the lost 10 straight, because that's when I started looking at their future 8 games and knew that if they didn't beat Sacramento, they were going to break the record.
In their next 5 games they have Charlotte, New York, Golden State and Indiana, 4 teams that the Nets have a chance of beating, so I'm not sure about how long the streak will still carry on for.

Well the Nets better win soon, but the Next few teams can be defeated , but we'll see if they win

NBA: Where 0-82 Happens?
Doubtful but these guys are going to have a terrible terrible record nonetheless.
I don't know if they will be glad to see Yi Jianlian back... If they are, it's probably the first time they have been.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:01 pm
I wouldn't count on 0-82 any more than I'd expect a team to go 82-0 but right now it looks like they could challenge 9-73.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:11 pm
Can they break the Record for the worst record in a season?
Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:13 pm
As I said, at this rate I reckon they'll challenge the record low of 9-73.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:37 pm
I doubt they break the record. The Nets aren't the worst team ever, and I would even go so far as to say they are better than the Wolves. Granted, I will be a little disappointed when this streak ends, as I love to witness history. Don't think Frank should have been fired. Sure, they went winless for an entire month, but look at the cards he was dealt. Oh well.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:53 pm
I couldn't rule it out just yet, the desire doesn't match what talent is on the roster. They've at least got a chance to equal the longest losing streak at any point of the season. even with winnable games on the horizon.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 7:11 pm
They have Charlotte, New York, Chicago, Golden State and Indiana coming up. If they can't beat one of those teams they should probably just be removed from the league and a supplemental draft had to distribute their players.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 7:30 pm
I'm rooting for them to reach 20 consecutive games, not that I have anything against them, just to brighten my life up a bit and give me something weird to cheer for.
Seriously speaking, once their roster is finally injury-free they might be a better team with all the pieces finally coming together?
Thu Dec 03, 2009 8:27 pm
The guys they have missing all suck so I'm not sure it'll make a great deal of difference.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 8:36 pm
If worse comes to worst and they still can't win, they have a chance against the Wolves in less than a month's time.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 9:08 pm
They'd want to hope they've broken the streak by then. If they go 0-28 before breaking the drought, I think they're definitely well on the road to doing worse than 9-73.

Well, 0-28 would be the worst case scenario. I'm keen to see how they celebrate their first win of the season.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:22 pm
I'll say they go 30 games without a win. and then end up winning 15 games over the season.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:08 pm
Is Devin fully healthy yet? Only crazy performance from Devin could stop this madness I believe.
It's just sad though to see them at 0-18 and more coming.
Fri Dec 04, 2009 1:03 am
I think they'll win count will pass 10, but not 15.

Any Nets fans should circle the date when they play the Raptors. Even though the Nets have one of the poorer offenses in the league, i'm sure any player is capable of getting on track by playing a team as defensively inept as the Raptors.
Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:14 am
Being the team the Nets break their streak against will be a dubious distinction in itself. I'm predicting that it will be come against one of the elite teams or one that's just above middle of the pack, a kind of "unlikeliest of unlikely wins" scenario. Or Chicago.
Fri Dec 04, 2009 12:07 pm
catching a team that's playing it's back to back on the road could do the trick
Brook Lopez, Devin Harris, Terrence Williams, 2011 top pick. i don't know about the rest of you but that's a solid, young core right there
Sat Dec 05, 2009 1:37 pm
Looks like they are about to "improve" to 1-18! Up 9 on the Bobcats with a minute left.
Sat Dec 05, 2009 1:40 pm
I was JUST about to post that Lamrock, you ninja'd me.
But yeah, they break the record and then they end the run, how ironic.

Congratulations Bobcats, you earn the dubious honour of helping end the worst start a team's ever had in the NBA. So much for my prediction.
