Doesn't seem legal.
Thu Nov 19, 2009 1:37 pm
It isn't legal. France scored a few moments later
Refs missed it

That was disgusting. Ireland got robbed. I think Thierry should just his name for good. Whilst I'm still happy NZ got to World Cup, not happy that Ireland missed out based on that

i know nothing of soccer but man i cant see how you get more blatant than that. Especially after an admission after the game...

I don't get why they won't adopt video replay challenges like they did in the NFL.
How many frickin times are goals made from a missed offiside or hands call? It's 'bout damn time.
Fri Nov 20, 2009 6:56 am
Screw you all, France ftw
Nah, it's certainly pathetic for us to access the World cup based on this...Henry did admit his gesture though, and the Irish secretary of justice apparently wants the game to be replayed, so that may not be the end of the story.

that may not be the end of the story.
Yeah but...
the Irish secretary of justice
Who gives a shit what the Irish secretary of justice wants

Saw a bit of discussion on it on SportsCenter. To me, it's all on the officials and in that respect reminds me of the controversy surrounding Dwyane Wade in the NBA Finals and flopping in the NBA in general. It's not right, we may not like it, but the officials are the ones that are truly at fault rather than the players.

hard to bemad at the player. Its not like ive never used a ref to my advantage (tiny guy up against big guys...i get teh call 7/10 times)...it happens and it will always happen, but not expect the losing team to like it. Its just insane on such a big stage with that many cameras to NOT have replay.

Absolutely. It should be a standard in sports these days.

I think camera replays kill the spontaneity of sports. I'd prefer to see Brad Miller's 3 count. I'd prefer to let a referee give a try rather than the video referee get it wrong (as usually happens). It sucks that mistakes are made, but such is sports. Don't see anybody discussing how the linesman missed two of the French players (including the goal scorer) being offside when the penalty was taken. So it wasn't just one error the referee made, it was three. Firstly offside, secondly the first handball & finally the second handball where he secured it to his foot which set up the goal.
Cheating/gamesmanship happens all the time in football (& all other sports for that matter). In the New Zealand-Bahrain World Cup qualifier the chump player from Bahrain kept flailing & going to ground & getting the penalty anytime he was beaten in the air for a header. Fortunately karma saved the day & that same player had his penalty spot kick saved by our reserve keeper.
The infamous dive in the Italy-Australia 2nd Round game at World Cup 2006 that propelled Italy to a dodgy World Cup title. Unfortunately karma didn't come back & bite the Italians on the arse, hopefully it happens at this World Cup. Along with French, I hope Italians don't make it out of the pool stages

I know where you're coming from because I felt a bit that way when the NBA was first mulling the decision to implement the instant replay rules, but so long as their usage is properly implemented I think it's for the best. In any given sport, there are some things the officials just can't see or fairly guess that can greatly affect the outcome, so in the interest of fairness the right call should be made. In theory, it should keep the officials honest in those calls as well.
