i live about 1.5 hours from Charlotte...wiki says there was a vote...i dont remember there being a public one. Just alot of not public fan feedback. I heard rumor was robert johnson picked bobcats to name them after himself. I'm sure it's hearsay and it wouldnt be an issue if they were winning but yeah...at least bobcats do live here...

I remember the Raptors at one point considered the Bobcats as one of their team names during the time of their inception to the NBA.... I sometimes think people are just pulling whatever out of their ass as a joke and hopes that it sticks.

Either way, Bobcats just doesn't sound very good. I don't know, maybe I just associate the team with sucking so much that everything about them sucks for me.

I thought when Grizzlies were just created back in Vancouver, the team was so awful that they actually didn't deserve to be in NBA. Their go-to-guy was Big Country, who at one point was a good player, but the team with him as the best player? It was just awful. I think in one season, they only had like 14 wins in total. Later, Shareef came and so did Bibby, but they just couldn't assemble a team that can make a playoff. In those short period of stay in Vancouver, the team was as bad as it could have got. They're doing bit better in Memphis though. Pau led Grizzlies actually was a pretty good team for awhile. Maybe AI can bring another good times to the Grizzlies.

Biggest mistake Stern made was expanding into Canada.
Worst team name? Utah and Jazz don't belong in the same sentence.

The "Thunder" worst name for sure. It sounds like a WNBA team. Detroit "SHOCK", OKC "THUNDER". They both just sound... like girl's names. It's kind of like naming a guy Sam It could be a girl or boy name.

What kind of girls have you been dating. Girls named "Shock" and "Thunder" sound like amazons.

Well American Gladiators aren't so bad I guess. They did have Gina Carano as Crush.

I meant girl team names...

DrGonzo wrote:I think something that sounds right and is appropriate to the area the team is based in is a good team name.
But that isn't necessarily the case. Grizzlies may have been more appropriate for Vancouver, but I think it's still a good enough team name now that they're in Memphis. There aren't too many Raptors in Toronto these days either, but that name also works. I just think it's funny how some names are appealing for NBA teams and others are not, with the reason not always easy to put your finger on.

See i actually think Grizzlies is up there with Jazz for most inappropriate team names. This is a really subjective topic. Raptors never made sense to me either but who doesnt like dinosaurs? Its all a matter of personal taste i guess.

The Raptor wearing high tops and dribbling the ball needs to go. That's so early 90s. Older even.

The Raptors were a popular choice at the time because of the popularity of Jurassic Park, beating out names like the Toronto Dragons and the Toronto.... Bobcats....

I wouldn't go that far. It's suitably mid-90s.

I think the Raptors' logo is alright; when the league has a team with a logo like the Thunder's, you can still do a lot worse.

That's what makes it an interesting point to ponder. I mean, the Lakers moniker isn't really appropriate for Los Angeles but somehow it works. It's hard to pin down a criteria for what makes a good and appropriate NBA team name. After all, what makes Lakers more appropriate than Grizzlies when both names were chosen with the team's former cities in mind? What makes Bulls a better name than Bobcats? What makes Thunder a name more appropriate for a women's team in a lot of people's eyes? As you said it's subjective, but I'm not sure we can apply any kind of reasoning to our respective opinions. I couldn't say why I feel that Bulls and Hawks are better animal names for an NBA team than Bobcats, except perhaps that they've been around longer and I'm used to them as NBA team names.

The Raptors logo isn't bad.
They just need to make it 'not human' by making it appear to be
the killer that it is instead of that pansy raptor playing basketball.
Even Raptor Jesus looks badass than the current Raps logo.

I remember that popping up a lot last year. If nothing else, the Thunder's logo is clean and simple. Unfortunately, it's also quite bland.

Yeah, I have no problem with the Raptor itself. But basketball shoes and dribbling a ball is kinda lame.
