What are you doing with your life?

Postby Null17 on Fri Aug 07, 2009 8:20 pm

I'm bored. This is basically a career thread. I think I remember we had one before but I can't seem to find it.

I've been curious as what you've been doing with your life (school, current job) and what you have planned for the future. And maybe how you got to where you are.

As for me, out of college I got a job at an IT firm as a business/systems analyst but I hated my situation and realized I didn't want to do that as a living so I quit after a month and a half. Went back to my hometown. A year later, went back to Manila and gave graphic design a shot. Pretty much just had my NBA wallpapers and whatever shit I made during my time here. Now I'm in a small/mid-sized ad/design firm with big clients (like multinational banks and hotels). It's been more than a year since, I've learned a lot and I'm pretty satisfied with what I'm doing. I'm still interested in the IT stuff (that's why it was my IT-related major in college) but I don't think I would've enjoyed it as much as what I'm doing right now.

On my spare time, I'm working on my 3D portfolio. Hoping to move on to a company that does outsourcing work for game companies. Would pretty much fulfill my dream of working with games as well as art. Long-term, I hope to start my own firm.

Your turn fellas.

Left the college life to move out with my then girlfriend and work full time as a Junior Civil Engineer. Love the job and I work with good people. Proposed to my girlfriend and she applies to graduate schools this fall. Then we either move or stay were we are depending on where she goes and once she's get done there, she works and I get to go back and get my Bachelors.

Freetime goes to games, basketball, tennis, working out or going out to places. A dull overall, but fun life.
Opinions are my own.

Not directly, but I'd suggest those who can pay bills and/or make rent are somewhat happier than those who can't.

Yeah, i was thinking like that:

If you are business man or hard worker, multiple shifts/night shifts just because someone needs to pay his loans( car, bank, home stuff etc),it all wrecks your heart and overall health(add alcohol and tobacco). You may not notice until it's too late. I meant that all you need to be "happy" is to have full stomache and your own home. Of course everybody love luxury things but there is no need to screw your health because of that. I mean more like "overloaning" guys.

Moderation is the keyword.

You need money for that, which in most cases means you'll have to work hard. I think what you're getting at though is that it's not a good idea to live beyond your means and rack up huge debts for the sake of luxuries you really can't afford, which I would agree with.

Before graduating from college I sought out for potential jobs, only ending up as a professor (or in a more common term in that company -- instructor) in the same college where I finished my engineering degree. I'm on my third semester in teaching and currently building up portfolio for graphics stuff, and making a few programs for my programming resume -- so that I can get out of the academe before it completely consumes me.

I'm pretty happy with the students, ask about salary and I'll cuss all over.

In general, design jobs have pretty shitty pay in the Philippines so better start ASAP so you can move up.

From what I can remember, they call you an instructor since a professor is a whole different animal. You have to get a certain type of degree for it and may not necessarily teach. That's what a teacher told us in college when the misconception was all of them were our "profs".

Indeed, maybe a master's degree will do. But err, no thanks. I don't want to teach forever.

Not really. Don't come to NLSC to think or talk about what I am or am not doing with my life.

Depends on the school. Some require a masters degree to be eligible for a promotion to a professor while others are just dependent on the students' and school's evaluation (performance evaluation), in most cases it's both. There are still different levels of 'professorship' e.g. professor I, professor II, etc.
The difference of course is in the salary/wage. I think being a professor has more freedom to control your teaching schedule/load as compared to an instructor.

Of course if you are a student, it's much safer to call someone a professor even if they are an instructor. You wouldn't want to anger those snooty professors just because they were mistaken as an instructor. Bastards.

I'll chime in!

I have two years out of 5 left on a degree in pharmacy at the University of Toronto (Canada). After that, I will write my licensing exams and be a pharmacist. Currently I am leaning towards clinical (hospital) pharmacy, because I work in one as a student during the summer and have found it really amazing.

I think my contract even says that my job title is "assistant instructor." And the company accepts applicants in the faculty even without master's degree.

One more year before college and I'm really torn between what I want to major in which, in turn, affects what college I want to apply to. I'm really interested in the field of engineering, but from what I've heard, it's crazy hard. My other choice would be a business major, something related to accounting or stocks.
Any NLSCers share their experiences in these two fields?
