True, I was going with the assumption that it was intended as an 'honorary roster' that wouldn't be designed with the intent of playing together in a theoretical game.

thats how most people do these type of rosters so its probably how you should do it lol. i always make them as if they played together
Thu Jul 30, 2009 11:18 pm
I make them as if you are actually going to play with them. Why else would David Lee be there (as much as I love his game)?
And to Andrew, yes, it's clearly a post-merger team. Otherwise Jerry West would be my starting SG and Bob Pettit my starting PF

i also consider them at the best they ever were which is why i say walton is hands down the best white center imo to play for any team i create. of course add in the injuries and things change alot

The conclusion in this case...all the REALLY good players needed to put together a "best of all time" type of team...are black.
I mean if you'd be taking your starting five:
Kevin McHale/Dirk Nowitzki/Larry Bird/Paul Westphal/John Stockton
And then matching them up to the "All-Black" starting five:
C: Russell/Kareem/Wilt/Shaq (?)
PF: Tim Duncan
SF: Julius Erving (or Oscar Robertson?)
SG: Michael Jordan
PG: Magic Johnson
It's a very hard argument to make against the second lineup there.

The "conclusion" to what "case"?
Nobody is arguing white vs. black, or even as a "best all-time" team. This is a thought exercise stemming from a stupid, hopefully parody, site.

Alright, then, to phrase it differently.
"It's interesting how much of a clear distinction there is in the talent level between the "All-White" and "All-Black" best-of teams.

At first glance, I thought that was Phil Jackson.

The guys in
bold are pre-merger players so they obviously wouldn't be included in any such matchup since Benji was only listing post-merger players. Kareem & Dr J obviously span both eras so you could argue either way (although I'd go with the pre-merger ABA Dr J).
EDIT: I'm looking forward to pre-merger All-White teams. Guys like Jerry West, Bob Pettit, Rick Barry, Pistol Pete Maravich, John Havlicek, Bob Cousy, George Mikan ,Dave Cowens, Bill Sharman, Jerry Lucas, Dolph Schayes & Paul Arizin will probably feature.

He's not an all-time great. A fine role player, but he doesn't belong on this list.

if you took the 5 best white players at thier best it would be a good game. i wont say they would win, probably wouldnt, but i think if you match walton, mchale, bird, westphal, stockton vs that 5 it would be a damn good game. biggest advanatage would be the size of the "black" team
Thu Aug 06, 2009 11:08 am
lets make this more difficult....
how about a team of white boys born in the U.S.A? no Dirk, no Nash....
and just for fun, the all native american team.... i dont think it can be done.... never mind
C Bill Walton
PF Kevin McHale
SF Larry Bird
SG Jerry West
PG John Stockton
C George Mikan
PF Dave Cowens
SF Pete Maravich
SG Rick Barry
PG Bob Cousy
PF Bob Pettit
SF Chris Mullin
SG Paul Arizin
SG Dan Majerle
PG Mark Price

That's still a good squad, even if you restricted it to post-merger.
