Brian Grant diagnosed with Parkinson

Wed May 20, 2009 6:20 am

Former NBA forward Brian Grant revealed Monday that he has Parkinson's disease and is starting a Web site devoted to his fight with the neurological disorder.

The 37-year-old Grant told ESPN.com that he was diagnosed in January with "young onset Parkinson's" and began having tremors in his left hand last summer. He consulted two other well-known Parkinson's suffers, Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali, and quickly implemented several lifestyle changes.

Grant played parts of 12 seasons in the NBA with Sacramento, Portland, Miami, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Lakers. He last played in the 2005-06 season, when chronically bad knees forced his retirement. He averaged 10.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in his career.

Wow... I hope he can battle this disorder. He was a rebounding machine

Damn.. :( Hopefully it won't progress much further. I wish him all the best. At least he has strong character, as he has shown that during his career. But it's really sad to read this anyways. :(

That sucks, he was always one of my favourite players, going back to his good rookie year in Sacramento (N)

Unfortunately, for the most part you don't. There are surgeries that can be performed depending on the specific type of Parkinson's that he has but as always there's no guarantee of success even if he is a candidate for surgery. One only has to look at Michael J. Fox and Muhammed Ali to see how badly it can affect people. My mother does some volunteer work with the local Parkinson's support group here in Newcastle so I've met people who suffer from it; from what I've seen and all I've heard and read, it's a very challenging thing to live with on a daily basis. Best of luck to him.

Damn. There's not too many more depressing things that can happen to a guy, and you've really got to feel for someone in that situation. Best of luck to Brian Grant -- though all I really remember him for in his career is being that guy who just stuck it out in the paint and then got traded for Shaq.

One of the coolest looking players of all time, what a shame.

Well, there are worse things you could hear from your doctor but it's certainly up there.
