If there's a roster included, you'll need to make sure it's been placed in the saves folder and that you load it when you start the game, otherwise you'll still get the usual NBA rosters. If all else fails, get in touch with the person who created the patch.

If you're still having trouble with the Shohoku patch, I would suggest contacting the author directly. I can give you a few vague pointers but it's their responsibility to support their own patch, not mine.
