Get the wired. It's cheaper and even Vista at this point should find the drivers, and it has a longer cord than any controller I've ever had. (Did find the drivers on my laptop anyway. If not, just grab them off Microsoft's website.) It does suck for older games that need more than 8 buttons, but you can swap to XBCD on the fly or use another controller. (Or use controller plus keyboard+mouse. A while on the older GTA for this driving + on foot, got me to accept such a control scheme.)
The wired controller is the same as the 360 wired controller btw. If you can't find in PC section of a store, it'll be in the 360 section. (All Wal-Mart's and Target's for example will put it there.) Microsoft just made it so it works on both 360 and PC easily.
Any 360 ports will have native 360 controller support (unless they screw it up) due to the nature of the devkits.
