NBA Live 09 Playstation 2, Wii and PSP Issues

Talk about NBA Live 09 here.

NBA Live 09 Playstation 2, Wii and PSP Issues

Postby Andrew on Wed Oct 08, 2008 11:56 am

Please use this thread to post all bugs/issues with NBA Live 09 for the Playstation 2, Nintendo Wii and Playstation Portable. Please keep any EA bashing to a minimum as these threads are meant for a constructive purpose, namely the listing of known issues to clear up any "Is it just me?" questions. It's unlikely any updates will be released for these platforms, however.

Please note that "outdated rosters" is not a bug, it's a result of NBA video games having a cutoff date for the rosters. The official updates will take care of missing players and trades throughout the season. Any other bugs and issues though, please post them here.

The Substitution bug is in the PS2 version. The players fatigue, but they are never subbed out (auto subs are turned on.)

In a 12 minute game there were no subs for my team, only three for the CPU team. That's with fatigue on maximum, sub frequency at 100, and auto subs on.

EA didn't bother to fix the same major bug that existed in NBA Live 08.

I'd say it's unlikely.

Not to get too off-topic but some stores (EB Games being one) have fairly lenient exchange policies that allow you to exchange games within seven days if you're unhappy with your purchase. Depending on where you got it, you might want to look into that if you're not happy with NBA Live 09.

Anyway, let's keep this on-topic. Any issues with those versions, please post them here. Thanks.

It seems I'm also the first ones to have gotten the PSP version of the game :D

Anyways, yup doven, the players seem to slide when they're running.

Here are my insights during my first hour of playing the game. (i'll just list them randomly, i guess)

---startup is quite slow. now i'm not sure if it's because of the firmware thing (i run on 4.01 m33-2) or if it's because it's a .CSO (i hope it's okay to say that :D )[/list]
---since rosters are not considered as "bugs", i guess i'll leave 'em for the mean time, although just an FYI that Derrick Rose is in the free agent list initially
---new mini-game: 2 on 2. yup they've added a 2 on 2 minigame, with the option of having powerups (like 2-ball) or not.
---OKC: errr.... i don't know what to say.... they are known as the "Oklahoma City Team" with generic black (away) and white (uniform) kinda like a practice uniform. also a generic Ford Center with black and white color scheme. they used the Sonics' font for the numbers in the front and back. :?
---teams with new home/away/alternate uniforms have been added (MIL, MIN, NOH, ORL, SAC, TOR)
---same interface as Live 08, with "The Crown" making its return
---teams are now classified in the "Play Now" screen: NBA TEAMS, ALL-STARS (i think), and ALL TEAMS
---a lot more FIBA teams as EA announced.
---just like in 08, legends teams are unlocked by completing challenges
---some starters are screwed-up so you will be wasting some time reordering the rosters
---ratings: i'm not sure, but some players haven't had their ratings updated (bynum is still a 61). also, last year's rookies still don't have cyberfaces (afflalo, etc)
---ROSTERS now have a separate save file.

GAMEPLAY
(for my first game, just like in all NBA games, I always use the Lakers (AWAY) first. and for my first "victim" i choose the aforementioned OKC "team" (HOME). 5 min/qtr, starter)

starters:
LAL
C Gasol
PF Vlad Rad
SF Odom
SG KB24 MVP :D
PG D-Fish

OKC (i may have gotten this wrong :!: )
C Elson
PF Green
SF Durant
SG Wilkins
PG Watson

---framerate is slow!!!! (again, i'm not sure if it's because it's a CSO or if it's because of my firmware)
---substitutions: no AUTOSUBS for me! the CPU auto-subbed about 2 mins left in the 3rd quarter. so I guess the substitution bug is still there (despite the auto-subs turned on and fatigue effect is 2/3 (values for fatigue are 0, 1, 2, 3)
---as doven said, players seem to slide when running
---i tried dunking sometimes and i keep hitting the front of the rim before the ball going in the hoop.
---a LOT of blocks by the CPU (i did not change the sliders), even on go-to moves
---to perform a crossover/spin move, you have to press L then either of the 4 action buttons, which for me is pretty annoying.
---some cutscenes (e.g. halftime break) take quite a while to load (again, maybe because of the FW)
---i thought blocking and rebounding were improved this year. in 08 i only averaged 15 rpg (same sliders), but in my first game here i had 29 :D
---NO COMMENTATORS AND ARENA ANNOUNCER  : this was very odd! dunno if it's because i was playing in OKC. i'll try it in other arenas.
---hotspots have been introduced by double-tapping the triangle button
---i won 92-24  KB24 is Player of the Game.

initial impression: 7.5/10
-if not because of the slow framerate of the game, i would have given it a higher rating :D but i thought it's an improvement over last year's game.

oh, and i don't quite dig the soundtrack yet. i still think last year's soundtrack was IMO the best soundtrack of the NBA Live series.

sorry for the long post. i'll end it here now :D

framerate is slow for me also, i have no idea why it lags so much, at first i thought it was my memory stick being stuffed up and stuff, but then, after seeing this, i'd say the game is screwed up...

i tried playing it again and the lag seems to have disappeared. must be an issue with OKC's court

More PS2 Issues:

There aren't separate settings for played game time and sim game time. Sim game time covers both. So you can't play a 9 minute quarter game while simming with 12 minute games. The choice is either play games where you'll score 150 points (12 minutes quarters) or sim games where rebounds, assists, other stats, and game scores will be low (teams average about 90 PPG.)

Sim Engine stats are still out of whack. In 9 minute quarter simmed games, superstars can still score 50+ points, but rebounds and assists are way down even in 12 minute quarter games. PFs seem to score most in simmed games.

Hardly any fouls. With all foul sliders turned to max there are maybe 10 fouls in an entire 12 minute quarter game.

I can score about 90% of possessions by taking any player down the floor right to the basket for a dunk. That's with all defensive sliders turned to max. Nobody even tries to stop him.

It's possible to create any patch for the faces or something like that , because the folders are the same like in the PC version (sgsm ,...) , and the game is (for me) horrible.

are thetre going to be any update for PSP.

i mean those ratings are really annoying, because in like dynasty mode, they don't let u choose who starts.

i try to start bynum, and turiaf starts at PF, and the regular PF starts at C. (love starting at C o.O)

and also, Spurs are way overrated lol.

Bruce Bowen is a superstar. o.o

and yea, there are SOOOO many comp blocks.

It's highly unlikely there'll be a PSP update.

I've discovered more issues (PSP and PS2), so I thought I'd share them with you:

[PS2]

---the two Mo Williams is technically not true. In the PS2 version of the game, this was also the issue. But when I went on "Edit Player" for the Clippers' "Mo Williams", he is actually MARCUS E. WILLIAMS. I am not sure why EA placed Mo Williams' portrait and ratings on him, when he clearly has his own cyberface.

---the Substitution bug (which existed in Live 07), is unfortunately back in the Live 09 PS2 version, which sucks. I just got the game hours ago and played a quick game of LAL (home, me) vs. MEM(away) (7 mins/quarter, starter). I did not change the game sliders but I did edit some of the Lakers' ratings (Farmar, Vujacic, Bynum). Anyways, here are my observations during the game:

1st quarter
--TOO MANY TURNOVERS!!!!!!! this really annoyed me, as almost every pass I made was intercepted (bounce/lob pass). Kobe - 14 pts, Gay - 11 pts (5-5 FGs). Score 22-17 LAL.

2nd quarter
--I rebounded better here, but Pau was only 1-8 from the field, with all 7 misses on layups and/or dunks?!?!?! I was like, WTF is this?!??! :!: :?:
I managed to get some steals though. Halftime 51-29. Kobe 29 points
(Kobe was the only guy I let score, as when I tried passing it to others, it would get stolen and/or blocked and/or they would miss an easy layup/dunk.

3rd quarter
--Memphis made a run, thanks to POINT GUARD DOMINATION (which is also back after a one-year hiatus, darn Live 07 game engine). This caused the Grizz to cut the deficit to 9. But thanks to the steals I got, I managed to seize control. End of 3rd - 72-55 :x
(I decided to give Kobe a rest. D-Fish scored 14 in the quarter)

4th quarter
--With Kobe back, I wasn't really threatened. The Kobester scored 18 in the 4th to help the Lakers pull away. Final Score 96-67. Kobe - 47 points.

Notable stats:
Turnovers: LAL 22 MEM 25 (this sucked big-time! I think this is my all-time high for turnovers in a game ever since I started playing NBA Live).
Rebounds: LAL 26 MEM 23 (but only 2 rebounds in the 3rd for LAL).

Here are some end-game stat screenshots (sorry for the somewhat bad quality) (click on the team names for the screencaps)
LAKERS | GRIZZLIES

---anyways, aside from the pretty crappy gameplay (oh, players also seemed to "slide" when running), last years rookies did NOT have portraits (whereas they have portraits in the PSP version. Why is this, I don't know...)

---some players had incorrect playing positions, like Randolph Morris at PG (should be PF) and Louis Amundson also at PG (and also should be at PF)

[PSP]

--I just recently discovered this odd bug.

Apparently, the CLIPPERS lost an additional game last season...

Image

Isn't that something???

Well, that's all I can share for now :)

I hope I'll be able to buy 2K9 by Friday :D

Wii Issues

Postby boshalladay on Tue Oct 14, 2008 7:09 am

I know barely anyone here has a Wii console, but I rented 09 before thinking about buying (luckily) and my impression was horrible.

-For some reason, the menus are all different shades of blue. Very psychedelic and eventually annoying.
-I decided to for the first game play Oklahoma City against the Raptors. Jose Calderon (66) is rated so bad that Anthony Parker (62) is my starting point guard, which still makes no sense. Under further inspection, around the league a lot of ratings have not been changed. (Brandon Roy= 74)
-Johan Petro looks to be at least 350 pounds.
-There doesn't seem to be subs, however I'm not sure.
- Graphics are miles worse than NBA Live 08. For example: I cannot read names on backs of jerseys. I sometimes have trouble with numbers. ( I could read these easily in 08.) I cannot see fans in nosebleeds. It is too dark. I cannot see details in the wood of the court.
This game looks like Live 03.
-capslock/ THERE IS NO RESUME BUTTON TO GET TO THE SECOND QUARTER. I CANNOT PLAY A GAME WITH MULTIPLE QUARTERS! /capslock
-I have come to the conclusion that this video game has been made by Larry Brown. O.J. Mayo=I.R. List. Russell Westbrook= I.R. List. Michael Beasley= 12th Man.
-Point and Pass is extremely annoying, as I cannot throw a bounce pass. Alley-oops off the backboard using point and pass seem to go in random directions. Nobody ever goes to the ball!!! My teammates just watch it roll away.
-Weird sparkles appear around the net after every score. Very distracting.
-To go somewhere in the menu, I have to shoot a ball at a basket. When I make a shot, I have no idea why it goes in. (You can miss.) I actually have to wait, to see the outcome of my shot, before I can go to the next menu.
-I didn't make it to season mode, as I was too discouraged by the game. No dynasty mode!

Two questions for the producer of PS2 NBA Live 09.

1. Are you kidding?

2. Where is your new job? (Surely he was fired for this mess.)

Anyone expecting a great deal of innovation in the PS2 version was bound to be disappointment since the 360 and PS3 are the platforms EA are focusing on now but some of the issues present in this year's PS2 version (ie. those that remain from last year) are frankly inexcusable. My honest opinion of the Xbox 360 version is quite favourable (full review coming soon) but the PS2 version is quite a sloppy production.
