They don't always pick the player who was on the top team during the previous season, that's not what I was suggesting. I'm just saying you can't count out someone like Pierce or Allen just because the cover player is picked before the end of the season. They're perennial All-Stars who were on the top team in the league through the course of last season (a team surrounded by a lot of hype) and they're well-known to NBA fans, which are qualities that are characteristic of past cover players.

The cover players really aren't that random. Since Shaq appeared solo on the NBA Live 96 cover they've all been stars or stars on the rise, well-known to basketball fans and marketable thanks to their popularity, fame and status in the league. I'm sure other factors such as players returning from injury or coming off a championship/MVP season are other marketing angles that are considered when picking the cover player.

Still, if you look at the past cover athletes, you see big time stars, who are the main offensive option on their team, that's Gilbert, T-Mac, D-Wade, Carmelo and Vince Carter they were all the top guys on their teams at that time, I just don't see this being Allen. Of course it could be Pierce, but no video game company would choose Pierce over Garnett(was he on the cover of Live before?), and Pierce wasn't really shining that bright in the regular season, unlike the playoffs and the finals.

Garnett was on the NBA Live 2001 cover and will be on the NBA 2K9 cover, so he's not an option for EA.

He was coming off a season in which he'd made his first All-Star appearance, had a shoe deal and still looked like a rising star at the time. Obviously, he was a flop.

Antoine in a shoe deal, forgot about that. Time to go to YouTube to see if he has some commercials.

I remember one that revolved around the "Employee Number Eight" moniker.

EA...whatever you do - dont put Ray Allen on the cover...
Pierce is better...a lot better...

P.S.: Could it be Rajon Rondo...some young flesh wouldnt hurt anybody...plus, he is a rising star...

I wouldn't think so, he's not nearly a big enough "name" to appeal to the casual fan.

Good point, specially when you know that the game features an Adidas team (I don't have 08, but I remember an Adidas team for 07)

Yes... the main team five of adidas are Duncan, Garnett, McGrady, Arenas and Billups

Someone Billups don't appear on the cover, maybe are him... :D

it is definitely Kobe. You can see the sleeve a bit(near elbow where he wears it) so its Kobe. wish it was LeBron though

Not likely, he doesn't match the silhouette posted on the official site. Also, welcome to the Forum. :)

True, but in terms of being a marketable player he's not up there with the likes of LeBron or Kobe.

True...but keep in mind that players like Rondo arent that expensive and they dont ask a lot of cash for their "services"...to get Kobe or LBJ on a cover, you have to pay a fortune...on the sports side, both, Kobe and LBJ "failed" this year...although in the last time, we couldnt see athletes with huge sports success on an NBA Live cover...*cough*Gilbert*cough*T-Mac*cough...

I guess tommorow we will all be smarter...

P.S.: If the cover sucks, i'll get the German version with Dirk... :D

I don't think a video game cover is a very lucrative deal no matter who the player is.

I dont agree with you this time...

I mean, if thats true what you are saying why havent we still seen LBJ on a cover...I mean last year he led his team to the NBA Finals...practically alone...heard somewhere that Jordan is demanding 25 milion US$...dont know if thats true...

Michael Jordan has asked for a lot of money in the past for the rights to his image (ie appearing in the game), not to be the cover player. I doubt any of the cover players get paid anything close to their NBA salary or other endorsement deals. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say it's not a lucrative deal compared to some of the others they sign.

It's not a lucrative deal, the players just ask for more money which the game company isn't willing to pay just to get someone on a cover. Unless your name is Michael Jordan and you're still an active player.

I feel kinda bad for posting this now since with 1 more reply this thread is going to go onto another page so no one will read this but pastapadre has this to say about it a couple of days ago.

Not much to read into as far as hints considering the ghosted cover art is the 08 Gilbert Arenas cover. Of the features announced to this point a guard seems to be favored if they are looking to tie the player into a theme. I’m sticking with my Deron Williams prediction.

Take it, leave it, sit on it, have fun boys.

(oh and I say Paul Pierce, but I tend to want that every year)
Opinions are my own.
