This is weird

Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:10 pm

Ok after the patch came out my game ran fine for two weeks then reverted back to like 3 fps, making it virtually unplayable, i got mlb 2k9 same thing happened since at that time i figured it was a ram problem since i only had 1.2 gigs so i got another gig so i now have 2.2gigs of ram, now get this i played both games all day yesterday switching back and forth, they are both playing like there supposed too all day and most of the night, and then i was in the 5th inning on mlb 2k9 and all of a sudden its back to 3 fps and now all my games even the older ones play at that speed all except for madden 08 which plays at full speed all maxed out, this is driving me absolutely mad, im about to just say screw the pc and go get a damn xbox 360, anybody have any ideas what this could be? i mean since it played normal for along time then now wont not at all for nothing, and i didnt do anything different at all just stopped working except one game this is bizzare, Please help if you have any ideas. Thanks

maybe some registry problems

It is possible, although i do have something called system mechanic, which is supposed to fix things like that, but maybe its doing the opposite and messing it up.

Tried it thanks, but it said i had 200 registry errors, and i ran it 3 times, never could get them all fixed so i totally rebooted my system and did all fresh installs and same thing it plays about 3 mins perfectly then drops to like 3fps even my older games that used to run perfectly run slow as molasses, i am at my wits end here just about ready to say to heck with pc and get a console, would be cheaper in the long run.

What are the specs of your computer?

It could be possible you have some sort of processor speed control where it would underclock your processor if it exceeded a certain temperature.

I just have a pentium 4 with a 2.60 ghz processor, single core, nvidia 7300 gt 2.2 gigs of ram, i dont have the latest drivers for my video card, as i tried to install them and when i do for some reason after they install and it reboots it totaa saying i have no video card, so i have the ones just before, but like i have said all my games have worked perfectly before, and now none of them play right, anyhow i have got a ps2 now, so as i get the same game on ps2 i will remove that game off pc till there are none left, i think it is absolutely ridiculous how they make the games lately so they only support high end machines even though the specs say they support like what i have, anyway thanks for all your help guys even though nothing has worked at least it was worth a try.

If all your games are having the framerate problem after a few minutes, then you are having a heat problem. You may need to make sure your CPU processor's heatsink is seated properly, and that your video card's fan is working. On my older cpu, I have a Sapphire Radeon X800 XT PE, and I was getting a very low framerate and some strange graphical corruption in Half Life 2. It turned out that the fan doesn't turn on sometimes, and the heatsink probably isn't helping much. I have a small personal fan blowing at the side of the case, which keeps the system cool enough to run.

A simple way to do this is to open the side of the case, and touch the video card to see how hot it is. Then start up the game, wait till the framerate drop kicks in, then touch your videocard again to see if it is alot hotter. Once 2K9 has a low framerate, ALT+TAB out of the game for a few minutes, then go back in and see if the framerate is smoother. If it's a cooling problem, the framerate should go back up to normal, and then when you start playing it again, it will eventually drop back down.

Another possibility is a virus.

Its doesnt seem to be a heat problem i checked that yesterday and it was really cool didnt notice a heatup at all even when it was played for a couple of hours it never rose above 70 degrees, i dont know how i could have gotten a virus i totally erased my harddrive and reformatted but the problem still exists, there could be a virus i guess deep down where my scanner cant detect it maybe

Actually now i believe it is a heat problem as i had the side off while playing a game and the fan on my video card didnt even kick on or try to kick on, does this mean the fan is shot or is there some kind of plug or connection that may have come loose?

You might be able to kickstart the fan with your finger, I was able to do that for a while until the fan never started up again. Yeah, you should check to make sure the videocard is seated properly and that all the power connections are securely fit. There are several possible solutions.

RMA the card and have the manufacturer replace the fan and send it back to you.
Get a replacement fan and attempt to install it yourself.
Get a PCI fan that sucks air from under the videocard and blows it out the back of the case. This would take a up the slot directly below your videocard.
Get a small 6" or larger personal fan and have it blow on the side of the open computer case while your computer is on.
