Orig. XBOX360 controller = I can finally PLAY!

Talk about NBA 2K9 here, as well as all previous games in the NBA 2K series.

Orig. XBOX360 controller = I can finally PLAY!

Postby Leander on Wed Dec 31, 2008 1:41 am

I got an original Xbox360 controller for xmas and can finally play the game! I don´t know why 2k9 has problems with all my other gamepads that work well with other games. Maybe it is because 2k9 was mainly made for consoles.

All of you that have problems with movement in 2k9 should get a wired Xbox360 controller. The game now feels completely different. With my other gamepads players would often move too much although only tapping the left stick slightly. I could hardly pull off moves nor move along the 3pt line. One slight move of the stick and a player sometimes even took two steps or one and turned after it.

I am really happy that I can finally play now. I can run, walk, make small steps, run to points on the court I want my players to move to. No more random moves, no more lack of preciseness.

I got the same feeling after lowering the analog stick sensitivity to 30%. Now I can pull off isomotion moves with ease.

Do the right and left triggers work correctly? What about when you press the analog sticks in like a button? Does the game recognize that? I had to map the analog buttons to a keyboard key with the logitech profiler to be able to use them.

The triggers work. They change the speed of a replay for example.

I haven´t played much yet, only three quarters. I was only behind by 3 compared to 20 with my other gamepads on Pro and your sliders.

What are the analog buttons for? Haven´t tested them yet. What should they do?

Sweet, I'm going to have to pick one up. The right analog button brings up a player's card when they are highlighted. You can view there career stats and contract thoughts, and other information. The left analog button does other things like saving a replay and the right analog toggles depth of field.

I had one bug though. I called a play (the PG something...your PG has to run to the blue spot and then along a line to the upper corner of the court)...but my player (the PG) could not move anymore. The left stick did not work. Had to pass to a teammate.

I ordered my controller from Amazon. It must be much more cheaper in the US than here. For us Europeans the controller is more expensive than standard USB gamepads for the PC. It costs 40€, which is about 56$.

I installed the Logitech drivers which also installed the Logitech Profiler and did it from there. It had many more options like sensitivity, dead zone, and the maximum value used when the stick is pushed completely in a direction. I did it mainly to map keyboard functions to the analog stick buttons, but found that very useful.

I wonder if Xbox360 users will get a better experience if they choose low sensitivity at the dashboard.

Both analog buttons work.
I still suck at iso moves. Some work but most of the time a random move is pulled off. I also have to say that I am not a fan of games with long lists of moves. Therefore, I stick to the basics.

Hop step is buggy. The instructions say that I have to press B4 to perform a hop stop but it is B3. It is the shoot button. After a hop step I cannot shoot right away. I have to use the right stick. A half-spin with a hop step works though. I can shoot right away with the button.

the problem with the 360 gamepad is that it use xinput wich is completely different than direct input. What this means is that you will have no rumble support and the 2 trigger will be mapped to one axis. you just can't for example use the 2 triggers at the same time wich make some post moves impossible to do. They made a workaround by assigning the trigger buttons to left and right bumper. It's a pity 2k won't release a patch to support xinput, the pc version can have better graphics but you have to put with thing like this, the 360 version just works, sure the visual are not as good, but you wouldn't be in a forum searching why the game lags with ultra player details, or why having a freaking keyboard make your game menus freaking slow. I was very happy with this port at first but seeing as 2k doesn't seem to care much to release a simple patch i will stick to the 360 version.

Yes, the triggers are an axis but I do not have to press them at the same time.

B5 is the left bumper, B6 the right bumper. Left bumper = back down, right bumper = turbo. Left trigger = dual control, right trigger = icon pass.

Do the triggers really control the replay speed like the 360 version?

The controller has it but it is not used in the game. I do not miss it though...

Ok, the patch has been released but I am still annoyed. The game is too difficult for me. How should I remember all those dozens of moves within one second? In many situations in the game, you should perform the correct move within a second...and I still have to think about all those combinations. The Live series is easier. It just sucks that you move your players AND perform moves with the left stick. Often, they do some unnatural moves etc.

You're not supposed to memorize all of them. You're only to memorize a few select moves that best brings out your playing style. Simply put, the moves you only memorize are your "go to moves". (Live reference right there. If I were to nitpick, I somewhat prefer Live's post control over 2K though)

It's the same controller for the XBox 360. No need to look for a "special PC" version of the controller. It only needs a usb slot.
If you're using XP, it's simply plug and play. If you're using Vista, you can download the drivers at Microsoft's website. You can see the web address in the controller manual when you buy it.

Surely a Wireless Xbox 360 Controller could do all the 'walking etc.' moves as well? Or do you need a wired controller to have full control over the left analogue stick? If so, how come? I'm asking as I'd prefer using a wireless controller over a wired one, but I don't want to lose out on functionality. I'm not sure why they'd respond differently though, as both a wired and wireless are still the same controller.

Anyway, any clarification would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

The wired controller is better. Yes, you can walk, run etc...the sticks are too sensitive though...as you cannot adjust dead zones of the sticks you should download a custom driver and not the original one. You can also set the triggers to work like bumpers etc.
It works well.

So out-of-the-box, with the original Microsoft drivers, both the wired and wireless controller behave the same? But the difference is you can get custom drivers for the wired controller, which improves it? Have I got this right?

Yes, you are right. There are some problems with the wired controller but I cannot remember what they are.
Just browse the forum. I'd recommend the wired controller.
