Talk about NBA 2K9 here, as well as all previous games in the NBA 2K series.

Jelani McCoy wearing his proper #4 in NBA 2K3

I recently fired up NBA 2K3 on my original Xbox, and I loaded one of the official roster updates (Yes, I have them) and when browsing through the roster, I noticed that Jelani McCoy was incorrectly wearing #42, when his actual number during the 2002-03 season on the Raptors was #4, so I was like "Hmmm....why's that?" then I realized it was an error SEGA did so I went ahead and fixed it, it was a pain, You can't edit jersey numbers directly on this game, I had to use a mix of the custom player trick I used in 2K5, in which I have a tutorial for and signing him to other teams and it took a really long time as well, it was not fun at all, but after a long while, I finally did it, and pics are below (including a photo of Jelani McCoy on the Raptors IRL)

2K3 screenshots are screenshotted from my original Xbox.

Great screenshots!

Roster editing was definitely a pain in some of the early 2K titles. My minimalist rollback rosters for NBA 2K6 on 360 have come together nicely, but it's a bummer not being able to change Years Pro, or even player positions.

Yeah, agreed, An annoying thing about this is that the games refuse to select many numbers in the 20's and 30's and also beyond 55, I tried to have Rasheed Wallace wear #36 to represent his only game with the Atlanta Hawks on ESPN NBA Basketball (2K4) but could not do it bc the game refuses to select #36 when it selects a new number for him when using the custom player trick or assigning him to other teams with another player with the same number as Sheed so I had to give up on that, had the same problem with getting Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) to wear #91 in 2K5's official updates with the same problem, Why did Visual Concepts set it up like this on both games I don't know but it's really irritating.

It feels like a lot of games underestimated the importance of in-depth roster customisation in the late 90s/early 2000s. NBA Live was generally the best at that time, though still with some missing functionality that would've been handy, and NBA 2K ultimately overtook them.
