How can I disable Steam auto update?

Hi all. How can I disable Steam auto update? Because the patch really ruined the game and the sliders... Click on Launch Game and starting update...

Start Steam, click on games, find NBA 2k9 there. Right-click on the game, select properties and then updates. You can disable auto-updates there.

I actually did that, but still every time I try to run the game it tries to update itself.

try turning off your internet connection when playing NBA 2K9
