Self created players in Backtop mode?

how do you get your self created players into Blacktop mode for a pickup game?

Also anyone find Blacktop mode a pain when selecting players for a pickup game? I don't like how it alternates between home/away team for player slection.
I would prefer if it just stayed at home team, select all players and then switch to away team etc.

I think you cannot use created players in Blacktop Mode unless (not sure though) you assigned them to a real team.
