2K9 considers an "open" player is someone who doesn't have a man directly on him. So, if you run the motown music play, you can get your sg open in the corner for a 3 as long as the defender runs into the screen. Depending on when you pass the ball to him, he might be behind the 3 point line or in front of it. Shoot the ball as soon as he catches it.
The trick to this play is not to go around the perimiter with the pg when the screen comes. Watch the sg in corner closest to you, he will be cuttin along the basline to the opposite corner, which is exactly where you will go. A screen from your center will be set for you. Make sure you don't run into your center, and as soon as you see your sg start to cut along the baseline, go in a straight line towards the opposite elbow of the 3 point line and use icon lead passing to guide him towards the 3 point line. Knock down the shot as soon as he catches it. Even if the defender contests the shot, if he wasn't already in his face when you started you shot, it is considered an open shot.
Also, hall of fame is not a very realistic difficulty, it's just meant to be hard.
Another thing I noticed when I couldn't hit any 3's was that my coach profile's 3 point tendency was really low. I increased it and I started knocking down 3's that I was missing before.
Tendencies effect the success of shots similar to ratings. If you play out of your players and coach's tendencies, you will have less success.
