editing contracts

Hey guys, just wondering whether any attempt to edit the players contracts can free up some cap room or is it just to show the terms and length of the contract?

I tried but no changes to the cap room, perhaps it will only take effect in the offseason? Thanks

By the way, not trying to cheat or anything, just wanna a few things here and there
