Problems starting an online game

Hey all,
A buddy of mine and me are trying to play online. However, whenever we try to do either IP-IP, or eaonline, we eventually just get to the screen where it ways we are 'waiting on the other player'. Eventually, the connection is lost, with us never getting beyone the 'waiting for other player' screen.
He uses Vista, and I have XP.
Any idea of security issues, or any reason why we can't connect? Our internet connections are fine by the way...

My first guess would be security settings, either the measures implemented in both XP and Vista or third party software, are the cause of the problems. If you're using a security package such as Norton or Trend Micro, I'd try disabling it while you're playing.
