Talk about NBA Live 08 here.

i dunno if this is an issue with the 360 version (it probably is) but i'm playing a lot of top-rated players on ps3 and somehow they can quit during a game and not get counted as a loss and a drop. it's as if the game never happened. anybody know how this works or can explain this to me?

Good question... I would like to hear about that too.
Sometimes my connection will just die. Sometimes I'll get a loss and sometimes I'll get a win and sometimes nothing is effected. I don't get it. Anyone know?

Here's a question: what happens if you just disconnect your ethernet cable?
I can't test it myself, 'cause I currently have only a silver account on Xbox Live, but I suspect that it would be really difficult for the game server to recognize simple network failure from a deliberate disconnection.
If it is programmed defensively, the server should treat this the same way as if the user simply quit the game. However, that might be a bit unfair in case of genuine network failures.

It's quite possible that they are just turning off the ps3. If I saw anyone do this in real life I would beat the crap out of them and take their console.

I'd say that's the line of thinking in not punishing players for a disconnection since there are probably are at least a few cases of players accidentally causing a disconnection or some other fault interrupting play. There definitely needs to be a feedback system (perhaps similar to eBay) so that cheesy players and bad sports can be identified and if not dealt with, they could at least be avoided by other players.
