Here I'd like to give you my opinion as basketball fan, palyer and as I was on duty in teh past as coordinator of a development team for a small sw company in Italy.
1) The great issues we everyone know is defence, obvious. I suggest you to take care of discovering how the difficulty modifier works through the game AI. Discovering how the code works passing from rookie to all-star to superstar is a great effort at all !
2) The defensive - phase quickness is relevant. Try to mod the speed of the teams covering the defensive phase. This could bring to solve the fast breaks big issues
3) The one to one sick situation. The strong PF or C beats everytime the normal defender. Discovering where's the force - balancing one to one parameter could be a strong milestone
4) The playmaker's cpu attitude is quite a good way to increas difficulty and in junction slow down the furious speed of our plays. Try to discover how AI works defending our playmakers, increase those parameters
Minor issues: go to moves are not including hooks. Cpu playmaker's often go out of bounds in one to one situations.
